What are women in

shelters in need of most?

FUNDRAISER!
Go-fund me!

• I created a go fund me account and shared it all over my social media to get the message out there.
It started off slow but then turned out way better than expected. In total I raised 1200$ for the
downtown eastside woman's shelter.

• I spent hours setting up my page and transfer information.

• I had to monitor daily to see any activity and if I needed to boost my site with shares more

• After I raised all of the money I had to drive to the bank and take it all out in cash

PICK UP AND DROP OFF!
Clothing donations

• I started the clothing drive the same time as my go fund me. It was posted and shared on my social
media as well.

• I got messages on text or messenger saying people had clothes for me to get.

• I either went to them by driving to pick up clothes or they would bring them to me.

• In total I collected around 14 big bags of clothing.

Phone call

• Initially I called the shelter, womans rape relief center. I called them asking what donations they
need and what they accept. This is when I found out they only accept baby items and non-used
clothes. I knew this wasn’t the shelter for me.

• I then called downtown eastside woman's shelter and they told me they accept everything I had
donated and what they need most so I knew what to shop for and what day to drop off.

• She gave me some advice that instead of making bags of mixtures of items to instead categorize
them so that its easier to store and grab exactly what is needed so no waste happens.

DOWNTOWN EASTSIDE WOMANS SHELTER
Creating women shelter bins!

• Firstly, after I finished all my shopping, I laid out all donations on the floor that weren't clothing and
sectioned it into categories. I then opened and labeled all the boxes I grabbed from local
Mcdonalds.

• I then labelled each box with what was inside. Then I grabbed the corresponding items and put
them in the boxes until all were done.

• I then taped them up and put them away until donation drop off day.

Drop off day!

• The day I donated my items was Friday, May 12th, 2023.

• This day was pretty hectic. I had to call my grandparents to see if they would come with me as they
have a big truck so everything could fit, loading the truck alone took over an hour. Then we set off
for the drive to downtown Vancouver.

• When we arrived, the scene was not great. Lots of drug usage on hastings street so we were pretty
nervous, then we got out to the shelter and it was much better, they gave us a cart to use to put
donations on and it took multiple trips. The shelter ladies were in shock and so beyond grateful.
They actually fully ran out of women hygiene products. They even teared up.

My thoughts and feelings

• Overall, this project made me realize how much I like helping people. Before this I knew woman in
the world suffered but I never really understood how much. These women in shelters have close to
nothing, they're barely getting by day to day. when looking around at those women it made me
realize how lucky I am to have access to these products and a safe home. Knowing that I made
there week even a little brighter made my life feel grater.
