What’s New

Plumbing enables us to use safely one of the most important resources: water.
This way, we can maintain our health and hygiene by using clean water, which is
not a resource everybody on Earth has access to. if plumbing did not exist, our
lives would be much less sanitary. We would not have to worry about fixing
plumbing deteriorations, however we would have much more illnesses spread
through food and other types of diseases caused by unsanitary homes. Plumbing is
without a doubt an important aspect of our lives which in the long term allows us
to save a lot of expenses. All buildings, being our homes, the places where we work
or malls, have some sort of a plumbing system which needs to be maintained. All
the necessities of our lives, such as washing clothes, keeping us clean and cooking
evolve around plumbing.
Having the right plumbing tools can make home repairs much easier, and in some
cases, a project will be virtually impossible to complete without the appropriate tools.

11

What is It

Plumbers install and repair pipes that supply water and gas to, as well as
carry waste away from, homes and businesses. They also install plumbing
fixtures such as bathtubs, sinks, and toilets, and appliances, including
dishwashers and washing machines, but before doing anything about the
job, plumbers should know about tools and materials to be used.

So, get ready as we proceed in our lesson

Plumbing Materials and Tools

PLUMBING MATERIALS
• Steel Pipe Characteristics

Steel piping is designed for a long list of applications. Steel piping has
gained popularity in the petroleum, oil, automobile, shipping and food
industries because of its durability and versatility. Schools, hospitals and
refineries also widely employ steel piping

1. FACT

o Steel piping can be engineered to any height and strength and is easily modified
on-site. There remains a variety of types of steel piping on the market.
Common types of steel pipe, its application, and its properties
1. Standard steel pipe -are used for transporting water, natural gas or steam.
- Standard steel pipes are fabricated to a diameter no greater than 16 inches,
according to Steel Pipes & Tubing.
2. Line steel pipe -are used to transport liquids and gases that are combustible.
- Line steel pipes are galvanized, giving the piping corrosion-resistant properties
3. Structural steel pipe -are often used for drainage piping.
- Structural steel tubes are constructed into either square or circular shapes.
4. Plumbing tubes made of steel pipes- are used to move potable water or
waterborne waste removal.
-Plumbing tubes are often fabricated thinner than other types of steel pipes to allow
for easier soldering.
Steel is ductile, bending rather than breaking in the presence of excessive stress.
Steel will not morph or lose its strength as time passes. Also, steel is naturally
resistant to rot.

12

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PIPES

PVC PIPE -refers to Poly Vinyl Chloride Plastic
material. This is the most common pipe for
plumbing system.

PE PIPE -refers to Polyethylene Plastic

material intended for long span water
system installation.

CI PIPE -is a heavy metal made of casting on

molds to make fixtures. such as sink, tubs and
lavatories, covered with a porcelain enamel
coating.

GI PIPE -is a galvanized iron pipe which is

better fitted for plumbing installation than
steel pipe. It is constructed of rough iron,
dipped in molten zinc and maybe identified
by its dull grayish color

BLACK STEEL PIPE is made of steel that

has not been galvanized. Its name comes from
the scaly, dark-colored iron oxide coating on its
surface. It's used in applications that don't
require galvanized steel.

OTHER MATERIALS IN PLUMBING

SOLVENT -is an adhesive material usually used
externally.

TEFLON TAPE -is specifically used for attachment

threaded pipe on fittings.

13

ABS CLEANER AND CEMENT -is an adhesive material used by a plumbean when
working with ABS pipes.

FITTINGS -are made in different

forms that are intended for plumbing
joints and connections.

FAUCET -is a point of installation system where flow of

water or gas could be manipulated.

ADAPTOR/ADAPTER-is fittings that joints two different

types of pipes together, such as ABS to cast iron or threaded
to no threaded.

2. FITTINGS – are any pipe part used to join two sections of pipes.

Characteristics of Stainless Steel Pipe Fittings

Stainless steel pipe fittings is an alloy based on iron, which combines
together the mechanical properties of steels and some specific features of
corrosion resistance.
These alloys are also liable to tarnish. This means that they have the
possibility to passivate, that means to get covered with an invisible layer of
oxides that protects the underlying metal from corrosive attacks.
They are a very important class of steels, used in countless applications. In
fact, nowadays both stainless steel pipe fittings furniture and construction
machinery are very popular.
The discovery of this type of steel is due to Harry Brearly, who while was
experimenting with various types of alloys for the reeds of guns, noticed that
a type of steel with a certain percentage of chromium did not get rusted
when exposed to the atmosphere.
Later this property was explained by the passivation of chromium, which
forms a very thin oxide film on the surface, continuous and stable. The
following progresses in metallurgy between the forty and the sixty have
extended their development and their applications. They are still refined and
adapted to the demands of various industries such as oil/petrochemical,
mining, energy, nuclear and food industries.

• FIXTURES

Plumbing Fixture is an exchangeable device which can be connected to an existing

plumbing system to deliver and drain away water but which is also configured to
enable a particular use.
- The most common plumbing fixtures are:
♣ Bathtubs ♣ Bidets
♣ Channel drains (also called trench drains)
♣ Drinking fountains
♣ Hose bibbs (connections for water hoses)
♣ Kitchen sinks ♣ Lavatories (also called bathroom sinks)
♣ Showers
♣ Tapware - an industry term for that sub-category of plumbing fixtures
consisting of tap valves, also called water taps or faucets and their accessories,
such as water spouts and shower heads.
♣ Terminal valves for dishwashers, ice makers, humidifiers, etc.
♣ Urinals

16

♣ Utility sinks
Water closets- (known as toilets in the USA, loos, flush toilets or lavatories
in Britain)

Each of these plumbing fixtures has one or more water outlets and a drain.
In some cases, the drain has a device that can be manipulated to block the
drain to fill the basin of the fixture.
Each fixture also has a flood rim, or level at which water will begin to
overflow. Most fixtures also have an overflow, which is a conduit for water to
drain away, when the regular drain is plugged, before the water actually
overflows at the flood rim level.
However, water closets and showers (that are not in bathtubs) usually lack
this feature because their drains normally cannot be stopped. Each fixture
usually has a characteristic means of connection. Normal plumbing practice
is to install a valve on each water supply line before the fixture, and this is
most commonly termed a stop or "service valve". The water supply to some
fixtures is cold water only (such as water closets and urinals). Most fixtures
also have a hot water supply. In some occasional cases, a sink may have
both a potable (drinkable) and a no potable water supply.

17

Traps and vents

This drain cover has a container underneath (which can be taken out for
cleaning and revealing another container below) acting as a trap. Water
inside the container forms a seal when the cover is in place. Positive air
pressure will push the cover up, acting as an early warning device. The
underside of the cover (center image) is kept moist by condensation
occurring and insects that go back up the drain pipe get stuck to the walls
of the cover.
All plumbing fixtures have traps in their drains; these traps are either
internal or external to the fixtures.
Traps are pipes which curve down then back up; they 'trap' a small amount
of water to create a water seal between the ambient air space and the inside
of the drain system. This prevents sewer gas from entering buildings. Most
water closets, bidets, and many urinals have the trap integral with the
fixture itself. The visible water surface in a toilet is the top of the trap's
water seal. Each fixture drain, with exceptions, must be vented so that
negative air pressure in the drain cannot siphon the trap dry, to prevent
positive air pressure in the sewer from forcing gases past the water seal, and
to prevent explosive sewer gas buildup.

The actual initial drain part in a lavatory or sink is termed a strainer. If

there is a removable strainer device that fits into the fixed strainer, it is
termed a strainer basket. The initial pipe that leads from the strainer to the
trap is termed the tailpiece. Floor-mounted water closets seal to the toilet
flange of the drain pipe by means of a wax ring. These are traditionally made
out of beeswax. However, their proper sealing depends on proper seating of
the water closet, on a firm and secure base (floor), and on proper installation
of the closet bolts which secure the closet to the flange, which is in turn
supposed to be securely fastened to the floor.

II. PLUMBING TOOLS

CLASSIFICATION OF TOOLS AND ITS USES

1.MEASURING TOOLS- is the activity of obtaining and comparing physical

quantities of real-world objects and events. Established standard objects
and events are used as units, and the process of measurement gives a
number relating the item under study and the referenced unit of
measurement

Steel Square is a tool that carpenters and other

tradesman use consisting of a large arm and a
smaller arm which meet at an angle 90˚.Today the
steel square is more commonly referred to as the
framing square.

TRY SQUARE is a wood

working or a metal working
tool used for
marking/measuring a piece
of wood. It is primarily used
to measure the accuracy of
right angle (90˚ degrees)
tried on any surface so as
to check its straightness or
correspondence to an
adjoining surface.

PULL PUSH RULE (Tape Measure) is a

flexible tape measure which is available in
lengths up to 50 feet. Other tapes that are 12
to 25 feet are usually considered adequate.
Most tapes have an automatic power return
that is useful but not necessary.

19

2.CUTTING TOOLS- is any tool that is used to remove material from

the workpiece by means of shear deformation. Cutting may be
accomplished by single-point or multipoint tools. Single-point tools
are used in turning, shaping, plaining and similar operations, and
remove material by means of one cutting edge. Milling and drilling
tools are often multipoint tools. Grinding tools are also multipoint
tools.

Hacksaw is a fine-toothed saw, originally and

mainly made for cutting metal. Hacksaws have a
handle, usually a pistol grip, with pins for
attaching a narrow disposable blade. The frames
may also be adjustable to accommodate blades of
different sizes. A screw or other mechanism is
used to put the thin blade under tension.

A crosscut saw (thwart saw) is any saw designed for

cutting wood perpendicular to (across) the wood
grain. Crosscut saws may be small or large, with
small teeth close together for fine work
like woodworking or large for coarse work like log
bucking, and can be a hand tool or power tool.

Pipe reamer
a fluted conical tool for beveling or removing
burrs from pipe ends

Pipe cutter is a tool used for cutting pipe and tube

20

A pipe threader is a device used to cut grooves or

threads into the end of a metal pipe. These grooves are
similar to those found on a traditional screw, and
serve the same basic function. The threads on the pipe
fit into a pattern of threads in the connector, allowing
users to screw the two components together by hand. This device allows
installers to complete plumbing projects quickly, and also serves as a handy
tool for emergency or repair work.

3. BORING TOOLS -boring is the process of enlarging a hole that has

already been drilled (or cast), by means of a single-point cutting tool, for
example as in boring a cannon barrel. Boring is used to achieve greater
accuracy of the diameter of a hole, and can be used to cut a tapered hole.

A hammer drill, also known as

a percussion drill or impact drill, is
a power tool used chiefly for drilling in hard
materials.[1][2] It is a type of rotary drill with
an impact mechanism that generates
a hammering motion. The percussive
mechanism provides a rapid succession of
short hammer thrusts to pulverize the
material to be bored, so as to provide
quicker drilling with less effort. If a hammer
drill's impact mechanism can be turned off,
the tool can be used like a conventional drill
to also perform tasks such as screwdriving.

An electric drill is a drill which is driven by an electric

motor.
An electrical motor that rotates a replaceable drill bit to
make a hole in wood, plastic, or metal. Alternately, a
screwdriver tip can be installed to turn screws.

21

A brace is a hand tool used with a bit (drill bit or auger) to drill holes,
usually in wood. Pressure is applied to the top and the tool is rotated with
a U-shaped grip. Bits used come in a variety of types but the more
commonly used Ridgeway- and Irwin- pattern bits also rely on a snail point
(called the snail), which is a tapered screw point shaped the same as a wood
screw thread, which helps to pull the bit into the wood as the user turns the
brace handle and applies pressure

4. TESTING TOOLS- -used in finding out how well the finished work.

A spirit level, bubble level or simply

a level is an instrument designed to
indicate whether a surface
is horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb).
Different types of spirit levels may be used
by carpenters, stonemasons, bricklayers,
other building trades
workers, surveyors, millwrights and other
metalworkers, and in
some photographic or videographic work.

A plumb bob, or plummet, is a weight, usually with

a pointed tip on the bottom, suspended from a
string and used as a vertical reference line,
or plumb-line. It is a precursor to the spirit
level and used to establish a vertical or
horizontal datum.

5. DRIVING TOOLS –help hand tools and power tools work together,
espicially important for the variety of drilling tasks that get done in
woodworking.

22

A sledgehammer is a tool with a large, flat,

often metal head, attached to a long handle. The long
handle combined with a heavy head allows the
sledgehammer to gather momentum during a swing
and apply a large force compared to hammers
designed to drive nails. Along with the mallet, it
shares the ability to distribute force over a wide area.
This is in contrast to other types of hammers, which
concentrate force in a relatively small area.

The claw hammer has a "claw" to pull nails out of

wood, and is commonly found in an inventory of
household tools
The primary use of the claw hammer is to pound
nails onto the wood and to extract the nails. The
flat side of the hammer is the head, and it is used for
pounding the nail deeply into wood. The other side is
the claw which is to extract the nails out a wood
surface.

A crowbar is a metal tool which is designed to

be used as a lever. It has a very basic design,
and humans have probably been using
versions of this tool for centuries. It has a
wide range of uses, and is commonly used in
demolition work, since it can be used to wedge
things apart, and is also used to open things,
like boxes which have been nailed shut. Many
hardware stores stock crowbars, and they can
also be ordered directly from their manufacturers.

A screwdriver is a tool, manual or powered, used for

screwing (installing) and unscrewing
(removing) screws. A typical simple screwdriver has
a handle and a shaft, ending in a tip the user puts
into the screw head before turning the handle. The
shaft is usually made of tough steel to resist bending
or twisting. The tip may be hardened to resist wear,
treated with a dark tip coating for improved visual
contrast between tip and screw—or ridged or treated
for additional 'grip'. Handles are typically wood,
metal, or plastic[1] and usually hexagonal, square, or
oval in cross-section to improve grip and prevent the tool from rolling when
set down.

6. HOLDING TOOLS- for holding firmly any material that has to be cut.

23

Adjustable wrenches are an essential item for any

professional workshop or home garage. With an
adjustable jaw, an adjustable spanner allows it to be
used with different size fastener heads rather than just
one fastener, therefore you only need 1 adjustable
spanner for multiple jobs. From top trusted Brands and
available in a variety of max jaw openings.

Clamp is a fastening device used to hold or

secure objects tightly together to prevent
movement or separation through the application
of inward pressure. In the United
Kingdom and Australia, the term cramp is often
used instead when the tool is for temporary use
for positioning components
during construction and woodworking; thus a G
cramp or a sash cramp but a wheel clamp or a
surgical clamp.

Bench vise, a common mechanical

device that is used to hold a
workpiece stationary, is an integral
tool in many woodworking,
metalworking, and other
manufacturing applications. Bench
vises (or workbench vice/vise), in
particular, attach directly to a
workbench to hold the workpiece during operations such as sawing,
planing, and drilling. This article looks at the different types of vises and
breaks down the way vises work and what materials are used to make them.
A pipe vise is an apparatus which enables a
pipe to be held tightly. Complete with two half-
circle jaws, the pipe vise can be tightened to grip
a pipe and hold it securely while it is being
worked on. Often a feature of a common bench
vise, the addition of a pipe vise makes the bench
vise an all-purpose tool capable of performing
many more tasks. The teeth of the vise are
critical in the gripping success of the tool, as
rounded or dull teeth allow the pipe to slip and
roll even though the vise is tightened.

What I Have Learned

In summary, this module identified materials and tools in plumbing, tools are
classified according to their functions, materials are classified according to their
uses for specific construction project, and tools and materials are selected per job
requirements.
The following are the key main ideas that were discussed:

• Plumbing is the art and science of creating and maintaining sanitary

conditions in building used by humans. It is also defined as the art
and science of installing, repairing and servicing the pipes, fixtures
and appurtenances necessary for bringing in the water supply and
removing liquid and water-borne wastes.
• Steel piping is designed for a long list of applications. Steel piping has gained
popularity in the petroleum, oil, automobile, shipping and food industries
because of its durability and versatility. Schools, hospitals and refineries
also widely employ steel.
• Steel piping can be engineered to any height and strength and is easily
modified on-site. There remains a variety of types of steel piping on the
market.
• Common types of steel pipe include standard steel pipe, line steel pipe,
structural steel pipe and plumbing tubes. Steel is ductile, bending rather
than breaking in the presence of excessive stress. Steel will not morph or
lose its strength as time passes. Also, steel is naturally resistant to rot.
• Types of fitting: copper supply, galvanized supply, and plastic supply.
• A plumbing fixture is an exchangeable device which can be connected to an
existing plumbing system to deliver and drain away water but which is also
configured to enable a particular use.
• All plumbing fixtures have traps in their drains; these traps are either
internal or external to the fixtures. Traps are pipes which curve down then
back up; they 'trap' a small amount of water to create a water seal between
the ambient air space and the inside of the drain system. This prevents
sewer gas from entering buildings.
• Classification of plumbing tools: measuring tools, boring tools, driving tools,
testing tools, cutting tools, and holding tolls.
