4.0 SERVICE MODE

4.1 OVERVIEW This section describes setup procedures for configuring

instrument parameters, loading data to and from a cartridge,
and calibration. These procedures are to be performed only by
trained service technicians. Setup procedures must be
performed before putting the 1550 into service and whenever
changes to the configuration are required.

4.1.1 1550 Logs A large amount of data is stored by the 1550 in 5 different logs.
Because they will be referred to throughout this chapter, they
are described here so you can refer back to them as needed.

Operator Event Log: stores the most recent operator actions

(100 events) by code number, time, and date.

Machine Event Log: stores the most recent machine actions

(100 events) by code number, time, and date.

Concentrate Data Log: provides the complete recipe for each

concentrate programmed into the machine.

Machine Data Log: shows Smart Connection machine

number, heparin syringe type, and blood tubing size.

Cartridge Data Log: presents all information programmed

into the cartridge being used.

The following tables show the data stored in the Operator

Event Log (Table 4-1) and the Machine Event Log (Table 4-2).

4.3.7 Using the A worksheet should be completed for each concentrate used in
Bicarbonate Dialysis the center. Once completed, a copy of each worksheet should
Worksheet be kept at the nurse's station for reference purposes. Please
note that because the Baxter 1550 can use 35X, 36.83X, and
45X concentrates, there are three different worksheets. Please
be sure the proper worksheet is used for the appropriate
concentrate type. The next few pages will have examples of
filled in worksheets, followed by blank ones for you to
photocopy and use.
Look at your concentrate containers and determine the units
used to express the different chemical concentrations. Enter
their mEq/l values into the worksheet as follows.

SODIUM BICARBONATE: If you use powdered Sodium Bicarbonate, enter the amount in
grams, divide by the amount of water used to make the liquid
concentrate in liters and enter the results as gm/L. Divide the
gm/L amount by the factor used on the worksheet and enter in
Box #1. If you use liquid Sodium Bicarbonate, enter it's diluted
value in the heavy lined Box #1. Multiply this value by the
appropriate factor and enter the results as gm/L in Box I. Copy
this value to Box I at the bottom of the form. Before you
proceed, look for other heavy lined boxes on the form. The
value you just placed in the Box #1 should be copied to the
Box #1 for the Sodium entry line and Bicarbonate Data entry
line.

Revised June 2000

4-10
SECTION 4, SERVICE MODE

SODIUM CHLORIDE: 35X and 45X Bicarbonate Concentrates do not have sodium
chloride in the bicarbonate. This step can be skipped for those
concentrates. If your bicarbonate has powdered sodium
chloride, enter the amount in grams, divide by the amount of
water used and enter the results as gm/L. Divide the gm/L by
1.18 and enter in Box #2. If you use liquid sodium chloride,
enter its diluted value in the heavy lined Box #2. Multiply this
value by 1.18 and place the results as gm/L in Box J. Copy this
value into Box J at the bottom of the form. Before you proceed
to Sodium, look for other heavy lined boxes on the form. The
value you just placed in the #2 Box should be copied to the #2
box for the Sodium entry line and the Chloride entry line.

SODIUM: Enter the Sodium value and transfer the number to final Na
Box A on the right. There is one exception; if the Sodium is
for an acidified contribution only, add the values of the box(es)
to the right of Na+ and enter the results as final Na in Box A.

CALCIUM: Enter the value and transfer the number to Box B on the right.

POTASSIUM: Enter the value and transfer the number to Box C on the right.

MAGNESIUM: Enter the value and transfer the number to Box D on the right.

CHLORIDE: Enter the value in the first box. If using a 36.83X concentrate,
also add the value in heavy lined Box 2 and place the results in
Box E on the right.

ACETATE: Enter the value in the heavy lined Box #3 for 36.83X
concentrate, or Box 2 for 35X and 45X concentrates, and copy
it to Box F on the right. It should also be copied to the other
Box #2(3) under Bicarbonate Data.

DEXTROSE: Enter the value and multiply by 100. Enter the final Dextrose
in Box G.

BICARBONATE DATA: You should already have entered the values for Box 1 and Box
2 (3) from previous steps. Subtract Box 2 (3) from Box 1.
Place the final Bicarbonate in Box H.

Revised June 2000

4-11
1550 SERVICE MANUAL

When all the boxes are filled in, you must check the ion
balance. Add boxes A+B+C+D. Now add E+F+H. The totals
of these two must be equal. If not, go back and check your
work. The 1550 will not accept the chemical mix if this ion
balance is in error.

If the ion balance is correct, set up the 1550 in the service mode
to enter the values from your worksheet. The Side Panel
displays will guide you through each step. Just remember to
enter the values in the order shown on the worksheet.
