The welder shortage has plagued manufacturers and fabricators for years. A global
pandemic, a shifting job market, and generational trends only have exacerbated the
matter.
On the one hand, many experienced welders—those tried-and-true pros who have
seen it all—edge increasingly closer to retirement or, because of burnout or disen-
chantment, embark on entirely new careers. On the other hand, as the manufacturing
sector knows all too well, millennials and Generation Z (and even Generation Alpha)
have an entirely different perspective on working in production or manual jobs.
Despite the staffing doom and gloom, strategies exist that can help any welding or
manufacturing team looking to hire skilled welders or the few-and-far-between new-
comers to the art of welding.
It starts with technology.

Just over a half-century ago, a small team of
engineers at Miller Electric turned out a machine
that not only changed how body shops at the time
repaired sheet metal, but also shaped how we think
of small-shop MIG welders from then until now. At
the time, all MIG welding machines were a combo
of separate parts, with the wire feed, power source,
and gas flow all stand-alone aspects that needed
to be connected and synced by the user. That all
changed in the early ‘70s.
“In 1971, Miller introduced the first power source
with a built-in wire feeder, the Millermatic 35. Rated
at 150 amps, the Millermatic 35 was the ideal rig for
sheet metal shops, garages, auto body and fender

rectangular housing. Worn, red Dymo labels with Inside the top box are a spindle for a wire spool
that lays flat instead of vertical like we’re accustomed
to, an old-school wire feed, fuse, and gas solenoid.
So what makes this unusual machine so special?
It is one of three prototypes Lloyd Gaurke and his
team at Miller built during the development of the
world’s first MIG welder with a built-in wire feed! It is
the super rare preproduction version of what would
become the archetypical all-in-one MIG welding
machine. The MM35 would become an affordable,
easy-to-use, self-contained unit that revolutionized
how we would use MIG welding machines then and
now. It was a 150-amp machine that launched the
now ubiquitous Millermatic line. And here I was
taking it in—the history, the ingenuity, the face that
launched a million Millermatics. And also, a machine
that’s been put to practical use for over 50 years,
evidenced by the spatter-covered consumables. Just
another tool in another garage.

A look ahead
Last issue, I revealed one of the most interesting and frequently asked
questions I receive. As for the second most frequently asked question I
receive: What do you see for the future of the welding industry?
This is a tough one. None of us has a crystal ball that lets us see into the future.
However, there are a few things on the horizon that may cause some major changes
in our industry.
The first is education. After many years of talking about it, I think we are starting
to make some headway in career and technical education becoming an acceptable
alternative to the four-year university track. With continued emphasis on this in the
secondary schools and a deeper understanding of the career potential by both coun-
selors and parents, we could see growth in the potential workforce.
In this same manner, the welding industry as
a whole should see a major increase in earning

The second is equipment improvements.
CHANGES IN OUR INDUSTRY. The latest development and integration of
cobots for increased ease and consistency of
quality welded products will play a major role in industry over the next decade. Other
marketplace developments that should have an impact include items like hand-held
laser welders, battery-powered portable welding power sources, the continued
refinement of GMAW pulse waveforms and inverter power sources, and intuitive
welding systems that use feedback to create the most consistent weld bead possible.
I took over this column in January 2018 from Paul Cameron, attempting to give
some insight into the industry that has provided me with a great career for almost 50
years. I have enjoyed sharing my thoughts with the welding community over the past
several years. But beginning next issue, this great magazine will have a new author for
this column. I am leaving the column in the capable hands of a longtime friend and
educator. I look forward to reading his contribution in upcoming issues.
Thanks for following along the last five years!
Jim Mosman

"We have been using the Siegmund Welding Tables from Quantum Machinery
and have added many more over years. We currently have a Plymouth Pro Mod,
a Streamliner for Bonneville and many other projects where these incredible and
practical welding tables have helped with the builds and repairs to race cars and
41
Land Speed Racing vehicles. We would take much longer and have no idea how our
creations would turn out if we didn't have these welding tables. If you want to be
successfull, you'll need Siegmund Welding Tables."
