Damage to Umgeni Water Nagle Aqueducts
• Tongaat Waterworks is owned and
operated by the city. This is the
Tongaat Waterworks waterworks that supplies the
whole of Tongaat. This waterworks
suffered serious damage that will
take months to repair.
• There is currently no access to this
works and the raw water pipeline
owned by Tongaat Huletts was
destroyed.
• The city will soon be engaging with
Tongaat Hulett regarding
reinstatement of the road and
repairs to the raw water pipeline.
On the other hand, the city will be
required to repair the waterworks.
All of this will take months.
• In the interim, consideration will
be given to procuring a package
plant that will be to supply water.
• The South Coast Augmentation pump station
South Coast supplies a large part of the Southern areas.
Augmentation This pump station was completely flooded
leading to water shortages in a number of

• Serious damage was also suffered to the
wastewater infrastructure. The pictures in
this alide are just two examples of sewer
trunk mains that were damaged that supply
two of the city’s 27 wastewater treatment
works. Similar and, in some cases, more
serious damage happened to other
wastewater treatment works as well. For
example, Umbilo treatment works was also
severely damaged (completely flooded).

Action Plan – Summary (Bulk Water Supply)
• Quick wins – Bulk Water Supply, 96% (520 Ml/day) of Durban Heights
production capacity restored by the 24 April 2022, 140 Ml/day will be
recovered. (Northern region of Durban - areas such as Kwa-Mashu,
Ntuzuma, Newlands, Durban North, Umhlanga, Phoenix and Inanda
etc.)
• Quick wins – Distribution Network, SCA pumpstation needs to be
refurbished to restore capacity. Need to appoint a contractor through
emergency procurement by 22 April 2022. Need City manager
approval, will recovered 100 Ml/day. (Southern Durban and Ugu -
such as Umlazi, Adams and Umbumbulu etc.)
Action Plan – Summary (Bulk Water Supply)
• Quick wins – Bulk Water Supply, Hazelmere dam water quality has
been affected, due to high turbidity caused by the floods. This
impacts capacity of WTW. Identified affected areas will be supplied
through tankering.

• Quick wins – the O&M team from the City have been isolating the major
leaks and bursts in order to conserve available water. A large portion of
Umhlanga has been affected by this process of conserving water. Once the
leak has been addressed, water supply can be restored. City will require
assistance with technical capacity to address this.
• Use technology (satellite leak detection) – Contract currently being
awarded.
• Quick wins – the O&M team from the City is currently conducting
investigations and repairing observable leaks on an on-going basis. Areas
with functional bulk water supply are being prioritized.
