Origin and meaning of Humanities

The word “Humanities” is derived from the Renaissance Latin expression

studia humanitatis, or “study of humanities”. The studia humanitatis was a course
of studies that consisted of grammar, poetry, rhetoric, history, and moral
philosophy, primarily derived from the study of Latin and Greek classics. The
word humanitatis also gave rise to the Renaissance Italian neologism umanisti,
whence “humanist”, “Renaissance humanism”. The humanities help us understand
others through their languages, histories and cultures. They foster social justice and
equality. And they reveal how people have tried to make moral, spiritual and intellectual
sense of the world. The humanities teach empathy.

Meaning and Importance of Art Appreciation

Art appreciation helps open up the mindset of the people, by listening to different
perspective and views as well as interpretations of the art, it encourages thoughtful
conversation and the understanding that there is more than one approach to everything.
Art appreciation is extremely relevant for multiple reasons. It is a good way to
understand the history behind the work, and the period from which the piece originated

Art History

It is the study of human expression – visual, but also tactile, spatial and
sometimes aural, and from the ancient to the present day that covers virtually
every aspect of human history and experience. This is because it looks at works
of art not just as objects, but as a way of understanding the world, and the
societies in which they were created.
