Performance Task # 2

NAME OF ACTIVITY
“STRAW WAVE”

Materials:
 Straw (50 pcs)
 Scotch tape
 Scissor

Procedure:
1. Prepare the materials to be use in the activity.
2. Using the scotch tape paste out one at the time the straw from left to right direction with
the same distance from the side-to-side of the straw.
3. Continue the process until you finish pasting/placing the straw in the scotch tape.
4. After pasting the straw in the scotch tape. Place the direction of the scotch tape from
right to left direction and stick well the scotch for the straws to hold into it.
5. Continue the process until all the straw are tightly stick together.
6. After creating the DNA helix like structure prepare it for the trials.
7. Observe what happened to the straw in terms of; tightly holding the end point of the
scotch tape, loosely holding the end point of the tape and twisting the DNS helix like
straw wave.
8. Answer the following guide question.

Analysis:

1. Describe the speed of vibration/ wave produced when you apply force to the straw wave
that is tightly hold from both end?

When the string is tightened, the wave travels at the same speed as before but much
faster. The direction of the vibrations traveling down the model could still be seen.

2. Describe the speed of vibration/wave produced when you apply force to the straw wave
that is loosely hold from both end?

When the string is held loosely, the wave travels at the same speed as before, but at a
much slower rate. The direction of the vibrations traveling down the model could still be
seen.

3. Describe, what have you observed after twisting the straw wave in terms of; the pulses,
wavelength, and amplitude?

Twisting the straw model results in a helix-shaped wave. You can see the troughs and
crests, as well as the wavelength, frequency, and amplitude. The wavelength of the
wave can be found and measured. We noticed that as we twisted the wave model more,
the wavelength became shorter. When we twist the wave model more, the amplitude
increases. It is the distance between the scotch tape and the top of the wave.
