UNIVERSITY OF BEDFORDSHRE

BA HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE

Module: Portfolio Assignment

Unit title: the Social Sciences at Work

Unit Code: ASS099

Student ID: 1819658

Date:
Introduction

In this portfolio, I introduce myself as Patience Eze Llevbabor, a health and social care student at
the University of Bedfordshire, who hopes to graduate with a BA in 2022. After graduation, with
my academic background, I can provide care and assistance to those who need social services,
employing a varied range of social skills and understanding to provide effective therapeutic
services to vulnerable people.

The purpose of this assignment is to illustrate career prospects relating to my subject area and
preferences, as well as the talents, knowledge, training, and traits necessary to work in these
settings.

As a level five university student studying health and social care, my knowledge and experiences
will equip me to become a trained social worker. My goal is to get a master's degree in order to
work as a social worker.

Role analysis

Early in the history of human services, which is currently known as social work practice, were
missionary poverty alleviation efforts that developed into nineteenth-century charitable efforts
and initiatives to promote fairness and equality. Today, social workers are guided by the
foundational principles of humanity, equality, and community progress (Gray and Webb, 2012).
From the English Intolerable Acts in the 17th and 18th centuries came welfare dependency,
social and economic policies; from the Charity Organization Society in the mid-19th century,
came crisis intervention; and from the dispute resolution house campaign, which sought to
resolve discriminatory practices, came the current social work practice (Ehrenreich, 2014).

Social work has had a rich history of legislation, including the National Assistance Act of 1948,
the Social Care Act of 1968, the NHS and Community Act of 1990, and the Human Rights Act
of 1998, among many others (Carr and Goosey, 2017). Social workers face a number of
challenges, including a lack of resources and a lack of support from the public. Fortunately,
legislation has been designed to effectively maintain social work practice, such as the Equality
Act 2010, the Care Act 2014, and the Adult Safeguarding Act of 2014, which require local
authorities to conduct investigations or encourage everyone else to do so if they presume an
individual is being victimized (Long et al. 2010).

Social care practice has increased dramatically, but this has not always been reflected in the
proportion of people who utilize social care services. In the United Kingdom, local governments
provided assistance to 1.7 million people last year, an increment of more than 100,000 over the
previous year's total. The demographic trends that have affected this rate of growth in care
requirements have also played a role (Carr and Goosey, 2017). Short- or long-term social care
may be required as the mortality rate increases and the needs of the elderly become more
complex. Elderly people are more likely to need help. It is estimated that 47% of individuals
aged 70 and up need help with everyday duties in 2016/17; this compares to only 18% of adults
aged 65 and over (Pawar, 2014).

After learning what it takes to be a social worker, I want to get my first bachelor's degree by
2022 and then pursue a master's degree to become a licensed social worker. As a result of this, I
will be able to get a working card in this area.

Reflective using Kolb model

In order for reflection to be effective, it must include not just the logical acceptance of ideas, but
also an understanding of the learning activity via personal experience and self-awareness. The
reflective process is especially important in relationship-based forms of employment, such as
social work, since it entails acknowledging and responding to one's own talents and aspirations,
as well as knowledge of one's own impact on others. By following the procedures listed below
(McLeod, 2013), it is possible for me to speak about my talents and skills as well as how to
improve my knowledge and abilities as a potential social worker.

Concrete experience

Working as a social worker will teach me the importance of communicating with and caring for
individuals who are in need of assistance. Being a student in the field of health and social care, as
well as having the ability to manage one's time efficiently, has given me a significant competitive
advantage in pursuing a career in this field. I was able to care for my elderly deaf grandfather,
who needed social care but could not communicate well because of his handicap, using my
skills, knowledge, and abilities gained from my academic learning. Using nonverbal gestures, I
was able to connect with him and keep the lines of communication open. As a result of my
previous academic training, I was able to establish a rapport with the service user. I feel that I
will need further qualifications and knowledge in order to achieve my goal of becoming a social
worker, and I believe that the course will help me accomplish this goal.

Observation and reflection

Aside from trying to determine whether or not the user was satisfied with my way of interaction,
I also wanted to make sure he was mindful of the potential risks and advantages of my presence.
In contrast, I was able to use body language as a carer to successfully convey the advantages of
my visit by highlighting him. Some of the problems that I will face in my new career were made
clear to me from these scenarios. I have come to realize that I need to work on my
communication skills even more to be a good social worker.

Formation of abstract concepts and generalizations

It was through my interactions with the deaf patient/client that I was able to get insight into the
proper way to connect with people with disabilities. In light of what I have learned from the
aforementioned event, I should be prepared to support the individual in such a manner that they
can see and understand me clearly. This is essential to know (Maclean and Harrison, 2015).

A few examples include sitting in direct line of sight so that the patient can see my countenance,
having personal notes to write down crucial points, and asking precise or closed questions to
ensure that the patient understands clearly. It is important to respect people's decisions even if
they do not agree with you, as long as you are absolutely sure that they understand the
consequences. One of the qualities I need to improve on in order to be a successful social worker
is communication and attentive postural control.
Asserting the ramifications of different scenarios

Having a notebook and a blue pen on hand is an essential component of my employability skills
and knowledge, so if I need to interact with a service user or document my chat with a service
user for clarification in the future, I always have these items with me. I know I am not very good
with computers. I will attend training on how to employ current technologies like an iPad to
capture data from clients. However, I will need more relevant training to become adept at
technology, which will aid me in my path to becoming a qualified social worker (Gray and
Webb, 2012).

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would not hesitate to apply for the post of Assistant Social Worker once I discover an opportunity to do
so. I am Patience Eze Llevbabor, a care worker at St Georges NHS, London, and I was intrigued by an
anonymous post for an assistant social worker in your company dated August 10th, 2021. I was inspired
to apply for the job opening after reading the role requirements on your organization's website.

You are looking for an assistant social worker that can evaluate needs and handle cases autonomously,
something I specialize in. As a care worker at St George's NHS, I worked on over 30 cases a year, from
admission interviews through to clinical outcome. From my first to third year as a care worker, I
increased the care completion percentage from 54% to 75% and patient experience from 60% to 89%. It
was important to me to construct a full picture and an appropriate care plan with family members and
participants. This gave me vital skills in eliciting personal data and using it to improve the individual
being cared for. I am a good assistant social worker candidate with many transferrable talents.

I am confident in my talents and team-building skills. My emphasis on developing excellent

professional connections has served me well throughout my career and will serve your business
well. I am a skilled communicator with a demonstrated reputation in case management and a
strong emphasis on professional connections.

I would want an interview as soon as possible.

Thank you

Sincerely,
Patience Eze Llevbabor (Signed)

Employment History/Experience

January 2006 - to present:

At St Georges Hospital NHS Trust, I function as a full-time healthcare support worker. There, I
provide care to elderly people living with mental disorders such as dementia, in addition to those
who have learning impairments. Understanding people's care needs and designing and executing
an appropriate care plan in partnership with other healthcare professionals on behalf of the client
are two major responsibilities of my work. As a result, I promote and help disadvantaged people
in their community by providing information, moral support, administrative and practical
assistance, and training as required.
1999-2006

Functioning as a professional healthcare worker for Reeds Nursing Agency in Central London, I
have worked at Kings College Hospital, Springfield Psychiatric Hospital, Queen Elizabeth and
Queen Mary Hospitals in south east London. It was crucial to my employment that I worked in
partnership with qualified nurses and other multi-disciplinary clinicians. In this position, it was
my obligation to precisely and swiftly follow the registered nurses instructions. I worked on
numerous units, giving personal care to a diverse spectrum of patients.

Knowledge and Skills

In addition to adhering to Council standards, methods, and procedures, I also keep tabs on
relevant legislation and procedures associated with the roles I hold. In my work, I am required to
employ the Mental Health Acts of 1983, 2007, and 2005, as well as the Care Act of 2014. I'm
just as familiar with the Children's Act of 1989 as I am with the Working Together Act of 2018.
I'm ready to fight for them because I'm knowledgeable about fundamental freedoms, government
tactics, and the legitimate roles and responsibilities of neighborhood governments. I value and
appreciate the opportunity to educate service users about their rights and responsibilities with
regard to mental health and associated assistance programs, allowing them to make informed
decisions. Relational skills provide me with the ability to form strong bonds with service users,
their families, and other professionals. I'm capable of conveying empathy and concern for others'
situations.
