Heading: Admission requirements (Part 1)

1. Research the requirements for admission to additional and higher education


courses that you may be interested in:
• Certain jobs require that you to get a higher education from a university.
• These jobs expect you to take specific courses / subjects that they feel will provide you
with the appropriate information to do the job,
• The assessments will determine if you have acquired the necessary information for the
job or not.
• You are then awarded a specific qualification to show as proof.

Courses are divided into THREE categories


• Certificate
• Diploma
• Bachelor’s Degree

2. National Senior Certificate (NSC) requirements for:


Each category requires you to achieve a specific set of levels in your NSC (matric) in order to
qualify for the courses within that category.

Bachelor’s Degree
Pass the NSC as follows:
• 1 Home Language at Level 3 or higher
• 4 other Subjects with a minimum of Level 4 or higher
• 2 other Subjects with a minimum of Level 2 or higher

Diploma
Pass the NSC as follows:
• 1 Home Language at Level 3 or higher
• 3 other Subjects with minimum of level 3 or higher
• 2 other Subjects with a minimum of Level 2 or higher

Certificate
Pass the NSC as follows:
• 1 Home Language at Level 3 or higher
• 1 1st additional Language at Level 2 or higher
• 2 other Subjects with minimum of level 3 or higher
• 3 other Subjects with a minimum of Level 2 or higher
3. Admission point score (APS) for institutions of higher learning
Certain Courses will have a subject and APS requirement in order to be accepted to take that
course.
This information will be available on the university website for the course you are interested in.

How to calculate your Admission Point Score:


6 subjects (Life Orientation is excluded from the APS).

It’s important to remember that each institution has its own admission requirements and you would
need to check with the institution of your choice.

Home Language 51%
1st additional language 32%
Geology 36%
Life Science 25%
Tourism 70%
Maths lit 43%

1. Does this learner qualify for:


• Certificate
• Diploma
• Bachelor’s Degree

2. What is the APS score for this learner?

3. Not taking into account the “subject requirements” for each career field, which career field does
this learner qualify for?
