Introduction
For this exercise I had to read some chapters from the Gospel Matthew,
Mark, Luke and John. I also watched a movie that goes by the name of a
passion of Christ. After comparing what the movie to each of the gospels
I have come to understand that there are numerous different ways of
telling the gospel, all from different books but all giving the same
information and lesson. So this exercise was about see that similarities
and differences of the way the each writer tells his version of the story.

Compare and Contrast
Ten Truthful Accounts

1) The Death of Judas

In the Bible: There are variant traditions about how Judas Iscariot died. According
to Matthew 27:3–10, Judas felt remorse after seeing Jesus condemned to death, and
he returned the silver and hanged himself.

In the Movie: Caiaphas holds trial during which false accusations and witnesses

are brought against Jesus and some priests, who secretly support Jesus and oppose
the trial, are expelled from the court. When Caiaphas asks him whether he is
the Son of God, Jesus replies, "I am." Caiaphas angrily tears his robes and Jesus is
condemned to death for blasphemy. As Jesus is brutally beaten, Peter is confronted
by the mob and he denies being a follower of Jesus. After cursing them during the
third denial, Peter remembers Jesus's forewarning, then weeps bitterly and flees.
Meanwhile, a guilt-ridden Judas attempts to return the money to have Jesus freed,
but is refused by the priests. Haunted by demons, Judas takes a rope from a
donkey's rotting corpse and uses it to hang himself.

2) The garden of Gethsemane

In the Bible: The Garden of Gethsemane is where Jesus prayed on the night of His
betrayal and arrest (Mark 14:32-41). According to the record in Luke, Jesus'
despair in Gethsemane was so deep that He sweat drops of blood (Luke 22:40-46).

In the movie: In the Garden of Gethsemane near the Mount of Olives, Jesus
(James Caviezel) is betrayed by Judas Iscariot (Luca Lionello). Jesus is
condemned to death for blasphemy and brought before Pontius Pilate (Hristo
Naumov Shopov), the Roman governor of Judea, for sentencing.

3) The Betrayal by Judas

In the Bible: Whatever his motives, Judas led soldiers to the Garden of
Gethsemane, where he identified Jesus by kissing him and calling him “Rabbi.”
(Mark 14:44-46) According to the Gospel of Matthew, Judas immediately regretted
his actions and returned the 30 pieces of silver to church authorities, saying “I have
sinned by betraying innocent blood.”

In the movie: After meeting with the chief priest Judas collected the 30 silver coins
and reveled the where about of Jesus and kissed him so the guards will be to
identify Jesus.

4) The Final Supper

In the Bible: He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying,
this is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way,
after the supper he took the cup, saying, this cup is the new covenant in my blood,
which is poured out for you.
(Luke 22:19-20)

In the movie: Jesus and his disciples sit on the floor in traditional fashion. Rough
stone walls complement an unadorned table set with plain clay vessels. The
seriousness of the moment is seen in the expressions of all those present. Breaking
the bread, Jesus explains that it is like his body that will be broken. The wine is
like the blood that will be shed on their behalf. Though his disciples scarcely
understand what he is saying, it is a moment that will be forever remembered in the
Christian celebration of Holy Communion. “Anyone who eats this bread will live
forever, Jesus had once proclaimed to the crowds. “This bread is my flesh, offered
so the world may live.

5) Jesus is arrested

In the Bible: When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said,
Lord, should we strike with our swords? And one of them struck the servant of the
high priest, cutting off his right ear. But Jesus answered, No more of this! And he
touched the man’s ear and healed him. Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the
officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, am I leading a
rebellion that you have come with swords and clubs?  Every day I was with you in
the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when
darkness reigns. (Luke 22:49-53)

In the Movie: While in the garden of Gethsemane the two groups were facing each
other and one of Jesus’ disciples struck one of the guards with a sword cutting off
his ear. Jesus said stop it and places hid hand over the guard’s womb and healed it
in seconds. Then willingly let the guards take him away.

6) Jesus before Pilate

In the Bible: Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the
teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound
Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. “Are you the king of the
Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied. The chief priests accused
him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See
how many things they are accusing you of.” But Jesus still made no reply, and
Pilate was amazed.

In the Movie: The chief priests and the elders made their plans against Jesus to put
him to death. They put him in chains, led him off and handed him over to Pilate,
the Roman governor.

7) Jesus is crucified

In the Bible: With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was
torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front
of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(Mark
15:37-39)

In the movie: Jesus carries his cross to the place of crucifixion, helped by Simon of
Cyrene. The crucifixion takes place at a location called Calvary or Golgotha. Jesus
is stripped and nailed to the Cross. Above his head is placed a sign that says 'King
of the Jews'.

8) The death of Jesus

In the Bible: At noon the whole country was covered with darkness, which lasted
for three hours. At about three o'clock Jesus cried out, “Eli, Eli, lemma
sabachthani?” This means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken
me?” The people thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah and waited to see if
he would rescue Jesus. Jesus then gave a loud cry and breathed his last. At that
moment the curtain hanging in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The
earth shook, the rocks split apart, the graves broke open, and many of God's people
who had died were raised to life. When the soldiers saw the earthquake and
everything else that happened, they were terrified and said, “He really was the
Son of God! “There were many women there, looking on from a distance, who had
followed Jesus from Galilee and helped him. (Matthew 27:45-56)

In the Movie: Pilate is not convinced that Jesus is guilty of a capital crime and
suggests that it would be sufficient to flog him. The crowd objects to this and
demands that Jesus be killed. Pilate gives in and sentences Jesus to be flogged first
and then executed by crucifixion.

9) The resurrection of Jesus

In the Bible: As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a
white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them,
“Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.
He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. (Mark
16:1-8)

In the Movie: Jesus was resurrected three days after his execution by
crucifixion at the hands of Roman authorities.

10) The brutality of Jesus

In the Bible: Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged. And the soldiers wove
a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head, and clothed him in a purple cloak,
and they came to him and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck him
repeatedly. (John 19:1-3)

In the Movie: Before the crucification Jesus was stripped of his clothes tied to a
pole and wiped repeatedly be two guards

Conclusion

After watching the movie Passion of Christ I can say that it is about the
last 12 hours of Jesus’ life according to the Gospels. Some of the events
in the movie maybe haven been incorrect, however the movie gives us a
vivid understanding of the suffering Jesus went through before he was
crucifed.
