Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Shoe polish is also known as boot polish is a waxy paste, cream, or liquid

used to polish, shine, and waterproof leather shoes or boots to extend their life and

restore their beauty. Shoe polishes come in a variety of textures, ranging from liquids

to hard waxes. Most shoe polishes are developed using solvents, waxes, and

colorants. There are three forms of shoe polish: wax, cream-emulsion, and liquid.

Each is made up of a different combination of waxes, solvents, and dyes, yet they are

all made up of waxes, solvents, and dyes. Many types of shoe polish became

available in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, but they were rarely referred to as

shoe polish or boot polish. Instead, they were normally pertained to as black,

especially when mixed with lampblack, or dubbin.

A rag, cloth, brush, or bare fingers are used to apply the shoe polish on the shoe.

Shoe polish is not a cleaning product; it is intended for shoes that are clean and dry.

A vigorous rubbing motion to evenly put the polish on the boot, followed by buffing

with a clean dry cloth or brush, usually yields satisfactory results. Spit-polishing or

1

bull-polishing is another procedure that involves gently rubbing polish into the

leather with a towel and a drop of water or spit.

This operation produces a high-gloss, mirror-like surface known as a spit

shine or bull, which is highly prized in military organizations. Despite its name,

saliva is less typically used as a polish vehicle or diluent than water. Carnauba wax

polishes can be used as a protective covering to extend the life and appearance of a

leather shoe. Pre-soaked shoe polish can be purchased in a firm sponge that can be

used to buff leather without the need to apply any additional polish to the leather or

the sponge. This is normally referred to as an applicator. Because shoe polish is such

a small market, its environmental impact is minimal.

Leucaena leucocephala is a small, fast-growing mimosoid plant native to

southern Mexico and northern Central America and now naturalized throughout the

tropics, including parts of Asia. Common names include jumbay, white lead, river

tamarind, ipilipil, tan tan, and white popinac. produce fodder but spread like a weed

in some places. Legumes are promoted in some Southeast Asian countries, at least in

Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand, especially as a source of quality animal feed,

but are also used in residual production. export firewood or coal.

Banana, a fruit of the genus Musa, family Musaceae, one of the most important fruit

trees in the world. Banana is grown in tropical regions, and although it is most

widely consumed in these regions, it is still loved around the world for its taste,

nutritional value, and year-round availability.

Desserts or bananas are most often eaten fresh, although they can be fried or

mashed and chilled in pies or puddings. They can also be used to flavor muffins,

cakes, or bread. Cooking varieties, or botanicals, are starchy rather than sweet and

are widely cultivated as a staple food in the tropics; they are cooked when ripe or

immature. He is a giant herbal plant with a visible trunk bend without breaking. The

banana tree has an underground stem has ambitious roots. It is full of plant food.

Besides the main body, it has other bodies called ends. These trunks become banana

trees. The banana tree bears fruit and dies.

Theoretical Framework

Banana Peelings, Ipil ipil leaves, and Minera

What is it about each that qualifies them as one of the ingredients in this shoe

polish? To assist the community in the management of eco-waste. To create a

natural, low-cost shoe polish that is equivalent to commercially available options. By

utilizing ipil-ipil leaves and baby oil as the main ingredient in manufacturing a shoe

polish, banana peelings can be made. Hypotheses: Banana peelings, ipil-ipil leaves,

3
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND

and baby oil can all be used to manufacture a shoe polish because they all contain an

oil that can help the shoes shine. The inside of banana peelings has a slimy texture.

It has a watery and oily substance that allows the shoes to shine. It's also high

in potassium, which is beneficial to leather. The term "baby oil" comes from the

word "oil." It's noted for its slick texture and gleaming appearance, which is why it

shines the shoe. When the leaves of the ipil-ipil tree are pounded, an extract is

obtained. And that extract aids in the gleaming and preservation of the shoes' quality.

The study's purpose was to develop a low-cost, high-quality shoe polish that could

compete with commercially available products.

It is also environmentally friendly and advantageous to community trash

management programs.

Preparation and Characterization of Shoe Polish from Cactus Powder and

Charcoal Powder

Shoe polish is a waxy compound that provides a thin film on the surfactants

of the shoe to improve gloss, rub resistance, fade resistance, and dust resistance. In

4

this study, new shoe polish was made using 5-g cactus powder and 5-g charcoal

powder in a 75:25 mL wax to olive oil ratio with denatured alcohol and benzene in

an improved technique. In addition, the made shoe polish was compared to

purchased shoe polish on quality analysis criteria such as viscosity, density, melting

point, reflexive index, pH value, ash content, conductivity, and moisture content.

According to the results of these criteria, the homemade shoe polish

performed similarly to store-bought shoe polish. Furthermore, the practical use of the

prepared and purchased shoe polishes was investigated by polishing some selected

leather shoes with these shoe polishes; the prepared shoe polish had a very good

gloss, dust adsorption resistance, fading resistance, and rub resistance after only

three days of use. As a result, the created shoe polish meets the quality requirements

and can be replaced with commercially available shoe polish.

REVIEW OF RELATED/LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter manifests a review of related literature and studies, which

presented adequate information for Alternative Organic Shoe Polish Made in Ipil-ipil

Leaves and Banana Peel. Numerous research studies analyze this topic and they are

10
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND
MATHEMATICS

indeed relevant since most of the common shoe polishes are containing harmful

substances that may affect one's health.

Review of Related Literature

According to Alberto M. Luzande (2019) dealing with dangerous chemicals

used in product manufacture is one of the most common challenges nowadays. This

project aims to assist ordinary people in discovering alternative products that reduce

the use of dangerous substances. Synthetic shoe polish contains a lot of chemicals

and has an unpleasant odor. Saritha Valsalama, Paul Agastiana Galal, Ali Esmailb

Abdul-Kareem, Mohammed Ghilanb Naif, Abdullah Al-Dhabib Mariadhas,

ValanArasu (2019), explained the use of plant sources as a reducing agent in

nanoparticle synthesis has become increasingly significant, as physical and chemical

approaches are more expensive and have negative environmental consequences. As a

result, it's critical to design environmentally friendly nanoparticle manufacturing

methods that don't rely on harmful ingredients.

HS Hussein, HH Shaarawy, NH Hussien & S I Hawash (2019), highlighted

that banana peels have numerous advantages, including being a good source of

soluble and insoluble fiber, fighting cholesterol, antioxidants, eye protection, and

other uses such as meat tenderizer, teeth whitening, polishing agent, and so on.

Certainly, the nutrients found in a banana peel are essential and break down quickly

(Brad berry 2017).

11

Cabeza (2018) The purpose of this study was to inform people that ipil-ipil leaves,

banana peel, and baby oil may be used in different ways, such as as an alternative

shoe polish, which can help people solve their difficulties with commercial shoe

polish. People's lives will be made easier as a result of the study.

Review of Related Studies

Shoe Polish is a consumer product that shines, waterproofs, and restores the

appearance of leather shoes and boots, extending the life of the footwear. Dubbin, a

waxy substance, has been used to soften and protect leather since the Middle Ages;

however, it does not give luster. Natural wax, oil, soda ash, and tallow were used to

make it. In the eighteenth century, when leather with a high natural veneer became

more fashionable, a high glossy finish became more significant, especially on shoes

and boots. To achieve this shine, a variety of handmade polishes were utilized,

frequently with lanolin or beeswax as a foundation.

Many types of shoe polish became available in the nineteenth century, but

they were rarely referred to as shoe polish or boot polish. Instead, they were dubbed

blacking (particularly when coupled with lampblack) or just dubbin. At the period,

tallow, an animal by-product, was utilized to make a primitive sort of shoe polish.

Balanon — this study can help the lessening of Banana peel waste generated all over

the world, and put it to better use. This study can also provide for the maintenance of

our leather shoes which we use almost every day for school and work.

12
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND
MATHEMATICS

This study can help discover the similar elements that form ordinary shoe

polish and banana peels. This study is also significant because it can lead to other

opportunities in which we can use other alternative products to form shoe polish.

Synthesis of the study and literature

The researchers gathered the review of related literature as the banana peel

and ipil ipil can be used or made as shoe polish. As a synthesis, it is indeed

beneficial and convenient to have an alternative organic shoe polish.
