The new Machines

During the coming century, scientists Will introduce a manufacturing strategy based on
machines and materials that virtually make themselves. It is called self-assembly. In
this process, atoms and molecules arrange themselves into ordered, functioning
entities without human intervention. Self-assembly Will permit the fabrication of
materials with new properties.
Mems in the future
Smart devices called microelectromechanical systems, or Mems, Will transform the
way in wich the world responds to us. They couple miniaturised mechanical and
electronic components. One of these Mems, wich combines actuators with sensors
and computation, is the device in a car that detects abrupt deceleration, recognises it
as crash and inflates an air bag. Data storage, computer displays, weapons, pumps and
valves are some of Mems’ future massive applications.
