Direction: Read the sentences carefully. Identify the word(s) being asked in each
test item and write them on your answer sheet.
1. It refers to a 2 or more computers, devices and computer systems linked
together.
2. Smallest type of network that is usually confined to a single room,
building, or group of buildings.
3. A circuit board installed in a computer that provides a dedicated network
connection to a computer.
4. It is known as identifier for a node or host to a telecommunications
network.
5. It is a process of dividing one network into two or more smaller networks.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Network Cables

Cables are commonly used in setting up a network. It is through the cable that data
flows from one computer or network host to share it with other nodes of other computer
systems such as routers, switches, storage area networks, etc. Network cable preparation
process is also known as network cabling.

1
Choosing a type of cable in setting up network depends on the complexity of sharing
the network resources. The following are cables commonly used in network cabling:

Coaxial Cable – is braided-grounded strands of wire that can provide some shielding and
noise immunity. However, the installation and termination of
the cable itself can be costly. Coaxial cabling, which uses
connectors called BNC (Bayonet Nut Connector) is known as,
in form of Ethernet, thicknet and thinnet, in the older LAN
technology, ARCNet, and cable TV.

Fiber Optic Cable – cable that carries signals, which have

been converted from electrical to optical (pulses of light) form.
It is consisting of the core, either an extremely thin layer of
glass or optical layer of plastic, which is surrounded by a
second glass or plastic layer called the cladding. The interface
between the core and cladding can trap light signals by a

process called Total Internal Reflection (TIR), resulting in the fiber-optic-cables/

optical fiber acting as a light pipe. Protective buffer and jacket

materials are used to cover the cladding layer. This type of Figure 4.2
Fiber Optic Cable
cabling is less frequently used because it is somewhat more
expensive than the rest, however, it is rapidly decreasing in
both raw cost and installation cost.

Fiber optic cables are not susceptible to interference such as radio waves, fluorescent lighting,
or any other source of electrical noise. It is the common cable used for network backbones
and can support up to 1000 stations, carrying signals beyond 25 kilometers. Maximum data
transfer rate is limitless, tens and hundreds of gigabytes per second, limited only by the
electronic components on each end of the fiber.

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) – is a set of three or

four pairs of wires, with each pair twisted around the
other to prevent electromagnetic interference. UTP
Cabling uses RJ-45, RJ-11, RS-232, and RS-449
connectors. Because it is less expensive and easier to
install, UTP is the most popular than other cables used © https://studyopedia.com/computer-networks/guided
transmission-media/
in network cabling. UTP comes in a form of Categories
(Cat) 2, 3, 4 and 5 grades. However, only Cat 5 is now Figure 4.3
recommended for any data applications. The maximum Unshielded Twisted pair
length is 100 meters, without using any kind of signal
regeneration device, and maximum data transfer rate of 1000 Mbps for Gigabit Ethernet.

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) – like UTP, it also has four pairs of wires, with each wire in each
pair twisted together. However, the difference is that STP is surrounded with a foil shield and
copper braided around the wires that allows more protection from any external
electromagnetic interference. Because of the shielding, the cable is physically larger, more
difficult to install and terminate, and more expensive than the UTP. Like UTP, STP uses RJ-
45, RJ-11, RS-232 and RS-449 connectors and also comes in Cat 2, 3, 4 or 5 grades. Although
only Cat 5 is recommended for any data applications. The maximum cable length with no
signal regenerating device is 100 meters, with a maximum data transfer rate of 500 Mbps.

Twisted Pair Network Cabling

Twisted pair wiring or cabling are commonly used nowadays in setting up local are
network. Cat 5 or Cat 5e UTP or STP cables and RJ-45 connectors are the materials
necessary in producing network cable. And the type of network cable that will be created will
also depend on its purpose. These are as follows:

• Straight-through – refers to cables that have the pin assignments on each connector
or RJ-45. Straight-through wires are commonly used to connect a host to a client. In
straight-through, the sequence of the colors (T568B) is the same both in Pin A and Pin
B.

for Straight-through Wire

• Crossover – similar to Straight-

through but differs on arrangement of colors on the other end. The other end has
T568A sequence while the other remains arrangement similar to T568B. Crossover
wiring are commonly used to connect two hosts directly.

Cable Raceways and Ducts

Cable raceways and ducts play a

significant role in network infrastructures.
Raceways are surface-mounted systems that
run along the perimeter walls of offices or
workplace. They are a means of routing,
concealing, and protecting network cables.
There are different varieties of materials used
as raceways and ducts, but most common
among them are metallic (made of steel or
aluminum) and plastic-based products
(typically made of polyvinyl chloride or simply
known as PVC). In terms of durability,
metallic products are often preferred
especially for long term use. However,
plastic-based is cheaper, easy to handle and
to install. In selecting a product for cable
raceways and ducts, we must take into
consideration the following:
Figure 4.6
• Type of the network cable that will Cable Raceway
fill in through the tube of raceway
or duct
• Filling capacity
• Number of compartments within the facility
• Bend-radius protection

It will still be best if we check first the arrangement and layout of the facility where we
will setup the network, it’s corners, number of equipment that will be situated on it, number of
personnel that are expected to move around, and other factors that might contribute in
incurring damage to the network cables.

Let’s Apply

Identification
Directions: Identify the different types of cable being described in each test items if it’s
Coaxial, Fiber Optic, UTP or STP. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
1. It is considered as the most expensive cable used in network cabling.
2. A type of cable commonly used in network cabling that is the least expensive and
easier to install.
3. Cable that uses BNC connector.
4. A cable similar to UTP but has foil shield and copper protecting each pair of wires.
5. A type of cable that is capable of carrying out signals converted from electrical to
