Welcome to the Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on: Use Verbs in Giving Factual
Information.!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

LESSON

Discussion/Modelling 1

Today, we are going to discuss words that will help us in giving or


sharing information. These are verbs. What is a Verb? Verb is a word that
expresses an action or state of being. It describes what the subject is doing.
Without a verb in a sentence full thought cannot be properly expressed.
Examples:
1. The student turns the pages of the Module.
2. The teacher gives instruction to the students.
3. The woman prepares her own breakfast.
4. We went to the chapel yesterday.
5. The students will attend the webinar In English.

These tenses are used to indicate actions done in the past, present and future.
They are also used in giving information.

In English, there are three main tenses: the present, the past, and
the future. It tells us in what period of time an action happened.

1. Present tense or simple present tense- it describes an action that is


currently happening or an action that exist regularly.
Example: Doctors and nurses examine the patients that are in the room.

2. Past tense or simple past tense – it talks about an action that happened
in the past, before the present time of speaking.
Example: The policemen told the driver to stop.

3. Future tense – it talks about an action that haven’t yet happened before
the time of speaking but is about to happen in the future.
Example: The teachers will start their classes on October 5,2020.

Verb also used to provide information in different ways. Read the dialogue
below and answer the following questions.
1. What verb is used in the first sentence?
2. What about in the second sentence? You are right!
3. How about the verb in the last sentence?
4. What word tells us that Bella is attending?

Bella: Hi, Bea! I heard that your club will sponsor a poster making contest
next week.
Bea: Yes, we posted the announcement on the Bulletin board located at
the Main Building. Are you interested to join?
Bella: I am interested, I also joined last year. What do I need to prepare?
Bea: You just need to fill-up first the registration form and submit it to
the Club Secretary. The rest of the requirements are written in the
announcement.
Bella: Alright, I will check the announcement later so I could prepare for
the contest. And also, I will inform my other classmates about that.
Bea: Sure, invite everyone to join. Hope to see you on the contest day.
Bella: I will be there. Bye.

verb is used in this sentence? Correct! The word “renamed” and it is in the
past tense
2. Immaculate Concepcion follows the Baroque Spanish design, in this
information, what verb was used? Right! The verb is "follows".
3. How about in this statement, The museum displays elaborate church
vestments and historical emblems. -Great, the verb is "displays" and it is in
the present tense Ok , it seems that you are now familiar with verbs. Let us
now try this exercise.

PASIC CATHEDRAL AND MUSEUM

Also known as the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Pasig


Cathedral is the oldest Marian parish in Asia. Like other churches in
the Philippines, the cathedral follows a baroque Spanish design,
whose structure is based on adobe blocks. While much of the
cathedral's design was altered in the 20th century, its bell tower
retains its historic appeal. Augustinian missionaries laid the parish's
first foundation in 1575, and gave it the title Conventus Visitationis
Mariae de Pasig (Our Lady of Visitation). Twelve years later, the parish

Remember that verbs show the action that occurs in a sentence. There
are a lot of words in English that convey meaning, so it is of great importance
to choose the right one in our sentence. Understanding action verbs will make
students better communicators and writers.
