READING

“STONEHENGE”

In England there is a very mysterious place called Stonehenge which means "hanging; stones" m Old
English. Stonehenge is a circular group of huge standing stones with an air of mysterious dignity. When it
was complete, it consisted of two circles and two horseshoes of upright stones. Outside of these circles
stands a single upright stone, which everybody calls the "Heel Stone", and thinks is the key to the mystery
of this monument.

The larger circle is 108 feet in diameter and consisted in a series of thirty huge monoliths with other large
stones lying across them. Of these, sixteen upright stones remain in position. The inner circle is about 90
feet in diameter and was formed with about sixty smaller stones, of which eighteen still remain. Inside this
circle was a horseshoe with five huge arches and inside the horseshoe was a smaller horseshoe of arches
consisting of nineteen stones. In the center there is a large horizontal stone about fifteen feet long named the
"Altar Stone". The largest standing arch is 21 feet high above ground and extends 8 -.4- feet below the
ground.

The entire monument is still a mystery. Nobody knows for sure the purpose of Stonehenge. Scientists now
believe that there were three successive monuments in this place. Some of the stones from the large circle
and from the large horseshoe of arches contain drawings of axes and daggers which one can see with
difficulty. Many people think that the whole monument was a temple to the sun because on Midsummer
Day, the sun rises directly over the Heel Stone. Other people think that Stonehenge, like other stone circles,
was in part a sepulchral monument. Scientists who have recently taken measurements of its orientation
think that it was erected as a device to predict astronomic events. Perhaps it was used for religious purposes
or possibly as a calendar. Long ago people thought that the monument was made in honor of a Roman god,
and others thought it was constructed by Merlin, the Magician in King Arthur's court.

There are more questions than answers. Some of the stones weigh fifty tons, but there are no stones as big
as these near Salisbury Plain, How did they bring them to Salisbury Plain? How did they raise them and put
them in place? Today we can lift heavy objects easily with cranes, but these did not exist in 1800 B.C. when
Stonehenge was built. Why was Stonehenge built on Salisbury Plain? Why not where the stones originally
came from? At present, there are no answers to these questions.

19
Another intriguing question is, "Who built Stonehenge?" Stonehenge was not a Roman monument
because the Romans arrived in England much, much later. Some people think that it was built by an
order of Celtic priests called Druids, but again we are not sure. And, why is the monument called
Stonehenge, "Hanging Stones?"
Only one thing is certain: Stonehenge is on Salisbury Plain, near the town of Salisbury, and there we can
admire it along with thousands and thousands of tourists who visit it each year.
