PADILLA, MIKAELLA JOY G

SECTION 31

Neiman's willingness to pour his heart and soul into his art and passion

In his own way of teaching, Terence Fletcher is an authoritarian leader who abuses his
students verbally and has a complete control over them. In spite of the fact that everyone has
their own leadership style towards their subordinates, I believe that we cannot control our
teachers and we do not know why they do a specific thing unless we learnt it ourselves. In
our own emotions, I believe that it is not others who are to blame, but ourselves. No matter
what others do to us, I believe that it is our own responsibility to act and react accordingly.
Terrence Fletcher's leadership will only work for someone who is courageous and passionate
about what he does, just like Andrew Neiman. In life, we will all face a time in our lives
when we cannot choose the challenges and the person surrounds us during tough times. As
we strive to achieve something, we must mentally and physically prepare ourselves for the
worst-case scenario, since we will face many challenges, problems, and people during the
process. People will perceive challenges differently, as a lesson to move forward or as a
hindrance to stop pursuing them.

Presented in this review is my perspective on Damien Chazelle's "Whiplash".

This will be presented in three main points, the first one being Fletcher's leadership style, the
second one being Andrew's dedication to achieve his dreams, and the third point is Andrew's
courage to fight on his dreams and prove them wrong. Earlier, I mentioned that Neiman's
leadership style isn't suited for those with sensitive personalities, but that doesn't mean that I
am validating his behavior knowing that he is mentoring artists as it may affect their choices
and take it as a hindrance to stop doing what they love. There is nothing appropriate about his
teaching style; instead, it is downright horrific. Despite thinking he's doing it out of a higher
motive, he's an intolerant delusional sadist who will stop at nothing to make sure he gets how
he wants. The problem with Fletcher is that he doesn't care for his artists, or if he does, he
doesn't even have a relationship with them, which is why some of them quit working for him.
Clearly, he lacks humility, and that's unfair to others. In addition that relates to this, it is the
institutions themselves that should inspire the students to continue their passion. Educating
artists and nurturing them to become the best versions of themselves is the role of institutions.
Considering that not everyone has the same emotional capacity to handle harsh words, it's
free to be nice and kind to everyone. The point is that Neiman's commitment really inspires
me, as well as everyone that has seen the movie. I appreciated him on every level throughout
the movie, from the part where his conductor replaced him up to the part where his family is
not proud of what he's doing. The bottom line is that Andrew works hard, is perseverant, and
also makes sacrifices in order to improve. He has finally proven Fletcher prejudice wrong and
surpassed his prejudice predictions. His success made him the next Charlie Parker, what
Terrence Fletcher sought. Finally, the last point as stated earlier is the climax of proving them
wrong but my favorited part is the how he aced and intellectual on how he responded on a
certain situation such discouragement and rejections. Despite of these challenges, I can say
that he is a professional artist who think critically and handle his emotions well. Even with
these challenges, I know he is a professional artist with critical thinking skills and manage his
emotion effectively and patient. Everyone with this kind of attitude will literally go a long
way. In art, it is given that you have to know the basics such as knowing how to draw or
imagine but the great characteristics of a great artist is being a critical thinker, being able to
control his mind and understand every detail of his work in a very skilful manner.
Considering Fletcher's dislike of "good job", I believe he only said it to Andrew so he
wouldn't try harder as he doesn't want to deal with Andrew anymore.

In the film, Neiman is shown struggling to consider himself a great artist. It just depends on
the artists emotional capacity whether he or she can endure the process. Because art requires
sacrificing everything, even your entire life. It is up to the artist to decide whether to sacrifice
everything for art or to give up and waste all of their efforts just because they can no longer
endure the pain of the process. Unless you have experienced pain, you cannot achieve
greatness in art. Since Andrew Neiman's journey to success has not been easy, I can relate
him to Vice Ganda. According to Lando, an understatement would be to say Vice Ganda's
life is a rags-to-riches story. His neighbours and classmates bullied him for being openly gay
in his youth. The teacher who encouraged Vice to pursue his dream no matter what made him
study hard and participate actively in literary-musical events. Their capabilities were
questioned by those around them, but both persevered regardless of the challenges, and now
the process has been successful. It is important to remember that art can mean a wide variety
of things, but it can also mean expressing yourself. Two things that do not require approval
from others are creating your own art and creating a life you enjoy. Guessing what someone
will like or enjoy is an impossible task. The experience of creating art out of passion for it,
from exploring your ideas and bringing them to form, is so much different from creating art
out of an idea for someone else to approve. It is only when artists are passionate about their
art and do not seek external validation that they become great artists.
