Energy of electron in nth orbit is En = J atom -1

For first orbit of He+, Z =2, n=1 E1 = x (2)2 J atom -1

Radius of nth orbit is rn= nm r1= = 0.02645 nm

###################################################################################################################################################################

Rydberg equation 🡪 =R

For first line in Balmer series, n1=2,n2 =3 =R =R ….(i)

For second line in Balmer series, n1 =2 ,n2=4 =R =R= ….(ii)

Dividing eq.(i) by (ii), = = = 4860

###################################################################################################################################################################

For the first line in Balmer series n1 = 2 andn2 = 3

= 109677 x cm-1 =15232.9

cm-1 = 6.565 x 10-5 cm = 656.5 nm

For the last line in Balmer series n1= 2 and n2 = = 109677 =109677

= 109677 x cm -1 =27419.3 cm-1 = 3.647 x 10-5 cm = 364.7 nm.

###################################################################################################################################################################

Energy of fourth energy level, E1 = - J/ atom

Energy of first energy level, E1 = - - J/atom

E4 – E1 = 2.18 x 10-18 J/atom = 2.04 x 10-18 J/atom

This energy is given out in the form of a single photon or quantum of radiation.

Substituting for h= 6.63 x 10-34 Js

and c = 3.00 x 108 ms-1 we get = = 9.7 x 10-8m =97 nm.
