ISM CODE : GENERALITY

What is the ISM Code?


The Standard for establishing a system for the safe management and operation of vessels and pollution prevention
– To ensure safety at sea
– To prevent human injury or loss of life

What are the objectives?


– Avoid damage to the environment with focus on the marine environment and on property
– Provide safe practices in ship operation and working environment.
– Establish safeguards against all identified risks
– Continuously improve safety management skills of personnel ashore and aboard ships, including preparing for
emergencies related both to safety and environmental protection.

ISM CODE : REQUIREMENTS FOR A SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Develop, implement and maintain a safety management system with :

1. Safety and environmental-protection policy


2. Instructions and procedures to ensure safe operation of ships and protection of the
environment
3. Defined levels of authority and lines of communication between, and amongst, shore
and shipboard personnel;
4. Procedures for reporting accidents and non-conformities
5. Procedures to prepare for and respond to emergency situations
6. Procedures for internal audits and management reviews

CREATION OF A SPECIFIC CARD

A specific card aim to give an instruction on board.

Due to vessel specificities and equipment they can be different from one
vessel to another.

Each card must be validated by SSE Department (SSE Supervisor


and/or DPA) before implementation except for specific Engine cards,
shall be validated by PMS team.

An instruction should be clear, simple and directive.

A minimum list of specific procedures required on board is given


(specific index) and can be increased.

MANAGEMENT OF REPORTS
Each vessel send to SSE Dpt :

SAFETY SECURITY AND ENVIRONMENT MEETING to :


- Develop safety culture on board
- Discuss about feedbacks from incidents
- Familiarize the crew
- Implement SSE objectives and instructions

MASTER REVIEW to :
- Carry out a complete evaluation of the IMS
- Ensure that documentation is available
- Suggest any amendment

DRILLS REPORTS :
- Drills reports according to SOLAS and company requirements
- Ship/shore drills to enhance emergency prepardness
