A. Activity
The students will solve the following problem:
In an orchard, there are 125 avocados and 173 mango trees. How many trees are there
in all? 125

B. Analysis
a) Can you name what kind of trees are found in the orchard?
b) Can you solve for the final answer mentally? How?
C. Abstraction
To do mental addition, use the following steps:
Add the digits in the tens column together and remember this result.
Add the digits in the units column together.
If this result is larger than ten then add one to your tens column answer from before.
The units column of the units column result is the units digit of your answer.
D. Application
Let’s build a pyramid by adding the equations mentally as fast as you can!
