The document discusses a study that evaluated the cytotoxic potential, antibacterial activity, and phytochemical components of Omalanthus macradenius, a traditional Mindanao herb used by the Manobo people to treat wounds, cuts, impetigo, diarrhea, and stomach disorders. The study found that ethanolic and methanolic leaf extracts of O. macradenius were not toxic to human red blood cells at concentrations up to 20,000 ppm. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of various compounds. However, the extracts showed no antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The study concluded that O. macradenius is non-toxic and lacks antib

Omalanthus macradenius is a traditional Mindanao herb.
The leaves are
used by Agusan’s Manobo to treat cuts and wounds, as well as impetigo, diarrhea, and stomach disordersThe leaf ethanolic and methanolic extract of Omalanthus macradenius was evaluated for its cytotoxic potential against human red blood cells, antibacterial activity against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, and phytochemical component. Standard protocol for phytochemical analysis and cytotoxic assay were followed. Hemolysis assay showed that Omalanthus macradenius methanolic and ethanolic leaf extract under 1 000, 10 000, 20 000 ppm concentration has no toxic effect on red blood cells. The phytochemical screening of Omalanthus macradenius ethanolic leaf extract revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols and tannins, glycosides, and phytosterols. Whereas methanolic leaf extract revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols and tannins, carbohydrates, and phytosterols. The disc diffusion assay and the antibacterial OD readings showed that the ethanolic and methanolic leaf extract has no antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study, concluded that Omalanthus macradenius is non-toxic and do not have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Antibacterial OD readings, and Phytochemical screening. Medicinal plants have long been used in traditional and ethnomedicine all around the world (Hao, 2019).
