Day 5

Question 1 – Write short note on Hardy-Weinberg Principle.

Answer_

Hardy-Weinberg Principle

Proposed in 1908 by

 G.H.Hardy_ a english mathematician

 W. Weinberg_ a German physician

Statement

 “Allele frequencies in a population are stable and is constant from generation to

generation”

o Gene pool remains constant. This is genetic equilibrium

o It describes a theoretical situation in which a population is undergoing no
evolutionary change.
o Gene frequency remains fixed, even remain the same through generations.

Factors which affect the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrilium

 Gene migration (gene flow)

 Genetic drift
 Mutation
 Genetic recombinations
 Natural selection

If these factors do not occur in the population, then population is genetically stable non
evolving population.
