ASTM A517 Grade E

General Product Description
ASTM A517 Grade E is a high-strength, quenched and tempered alloy steel plate intended for pressure vessel applications. A517 Grade E is available in
thicknesses up to 6.0 inches and has a minimum yield strength of 100 ksi up to 2.5 inches in thickness and 90 ksi for plates greater than 2.5 inches to 6
inches in thickness. ASTM A517 Grade E also has required Charpy V-notch impact property requirements.
Applications
Typical applications for A517 Grade E include unfired pressure vessels and tanks.
Dimension Range
Grade Product type Thickness Width Length
(in) (in) (in)
E Mill plate 0.188 - 3.50 60 - 131.9 73 - 588
Thickness: Please inquire for thickness less than 0.197 inches down to 0.188 inches.
Width: Please inquire for widths less than 72 inches down to 60 inches and for widths greater than 120 inches up to 131.9 inches.
Length: Please inquire for lengths less than 120 inches down to 73 inches, and for lengths greater than 588 inches.

Mechanical Properties
Tensile testing is performed in the transverse direction according to ASTM A20 requirements. The tensile property requirements are tabulated below:
Grade Thickness Yield strength Tensile strength Elongation in 2" 1) Reduction in area Reduction in area
(in) (min ksi) (ksi) (min %) for rectangle for round
specimens 2) specimens 3)
(min %) (min %)
E 0.188 - 2.500 100 115 - 135 16 35 45
E 2.51 - 3.50 90 105 - 135 14 — 45
1) Refer to ASTM A20/A20M for Elongation adjustments based on plate thickness.
2) Reduction in area for 1.5 inches wide rectangular tension specimen. For plate thicknesses of 0.750 inches and less, the test specimen must be a 1.5 inch wide rectangular specimen.
3) Reduction in area for 0.5 inch wide round tension specimen.

Mechanical Testing
Charpy V-Notch Impact Properties: A transverse Charpy V-notch lateral expansion of 0.015" [0.38 mm] in individual specimens is required. The test
temperature shall be agreed upon between the manufacturer and purchaser. Please inquire for required Charpy V-notch test temperature and for other
specified minimum impact property requirements. All test temperatures must be specified on each purchase order.

Tolerances
Thickness, width and length tolerances for ASTM A517 Grade E steel plate are in accordance with the requirements of ASTM A20. The flatness tolerance for
thicknesses of 0.188 inches to 0.500 inches for as-supplied product is 1/2 Standard ASTM A20. Flatness tolerances for thicknesses greater than 0.500
inches is 6mm/m.

Weldability
Welding of A517 Grade E shall be performed in accordance with the applicable welding code. Special welding consumables and welding procedures may be
needed to meet specific requirements for a given application. Low hydrogen practices are strongly recommended, including the removal of surface
moisture. A517 Grade E may be susceptible to reheat cracking in the heat-affected zone of welds during stress relieving or postweld heat treatment. As a
result, SSAB recommends that a qualified welding engineer consider this potential before stress relieving weldments of this product. For additional welding
information, please contact your SSAB representative.
