K K109-3 Bargraph oiIpressure m eter

n e bar graph oilpressure m eter clcuituses a low-costsending unit

m anufacturedby GeheralM otorswhich iseasy to fiton any engine.IfyourFirebird

11an oilpressure gage,the sendl
'ng unit is already on your
engine.

W ith the application ofpressure,tâe sendingunit'sreskstance change

isvirtually linear. A t45 PSI,itdelivers about 45.o%m s. So like in the fuellevel
m eter circuitswe feed 5 voltsvia R 14 which,along w1111txe sending unitz form s a
voltage divider. n isvolo ge is then applied O ectly to the LM 3914N driver input
(seeFigure19).

For easier readings,we choose to have a 5 PSI by LED resolution.

And to be practical,we choose the 10 to 55 PSI range. So 0.26 volt is applied to
pins4 and 8,respectively thelowerend oftheten com paratorsand the floating input
ofthe reference volu ge source. r
fhks1ow volu ge isdelived from tàe 5-voltline via
R 15 and P2.

At1ow pressurelevels,oratnopressure atall(enginenotrunning),

R 14 m ightgethotter than other resistors. In factsit dissipatesm ostpartof the 5-
voltor even all,which m eans a 0.208-wat1drop. U sing a K-watttype for R 14 will
avoid any problem related to this.

Adding sound

A dding sound to the 4-step sequencercircuitm ightbe an interesting

feam re,especially if a differenttone Lsproduced foreach output. Pedorm ing this
task issim ple using a phone tone integrated circuitadesigned to generate the DTM F
(dualtonemulti-frequency)signalsused inTouch-Tone*telephonesystems. n e
1CM 5089 isone ofthose.

A Touch Tone keypad isarranged in 4 rowsand 3 colum ns,wbile each

row and each colum p are auœ iated to a 1- and high frequency, respecdvely.
D epreuing a key connects one row and one colum n to ground, tlm s enabling the
chip to m ix the two arxsœ iated frequenciesinto one distincttone.

In ourcustom application,a lansistorcan be placed ateach outputof

a sequencingcircuitto substitute forthe switchingaction ofa telephonekeypad, thus
generating a selected tone foreach ofitsoutputs. A typicalblock diagram forsuch
an application is presented in Figure 33. n e flip-flopsare intended to keep the
LEDS lighted once triggered by a sequencing pulse. Note thatthe outputnm plifier

Accelerom eter(G-meter)

G-force ratings are often associated w1t.

in other words, that's the force opposed to the gravity which could attract your
vehicle outofthekack. A gaugem easuring G -force iscalled an accelerom eter, but
m ustnotbe confused with dbration m eters.

n ereare two approachesto thedesign ofan accelerom eter.n e first

potentiom eter willbe partof a potentialdivider and the resulting voluge cmlbe
displayed and interpreted as a G-force reading once properly calibrated.

n e second approac: involves using a specially designed solid-su te

sensor, like the SXLOIOG m anufacm red by Sensym . n is device uses an acdve 4-
