Crochet heart – freeform crochet pattern

This crochet ornament is made in freeform crochet

technique.

You will need small amount of yarn of your choice and crochet hook; the pictured hearts are made with
yarn of weight category 3 DK WEIGHT: LIGHT WORSTED YARN (red), doubled (2 strands of yarn
are worked as if they were one); and weight category 4 WORSTED WEIGHT: AFGHAN, ARAN
YARN (lilac), using crochet hook US F 5 (3.75mm)

Measurements:

red heart – 3.75 inches (9.5cm)

lilac heart – 3.5 inches (9cm)

ABBREVIATIONS

ch = chain stitch

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

dc = double crochet

tr = treble crochet

sl st = slip stitch

Description of work

Round 1: Ch2, into second from the hook loop: 2 sc, 2 hdc, 8 dc = 12 sts

Round 2 – into back loops: 2 dc in each st; another 3 dc in the same last st = 27 sts altogether; skip 1
stitch, sl st in next dc; cut the yarn

Attach the yarn at the first front loop and work all following stitches into front loops: ch1,

3 sc into first front loop, 2 hdc into next stitch, * 2 dc into next stitch, 1 dc into next stitch, repeat

from * 4 times; * 2 tr into next stitch, 1 tr into next stitch, repeat from * 2 times; 2 tr into next 3

stitches; * 2 dc into next stitch, 1 dc into next stitch, repeat from * 2 times; 2 dc into next 2 stitches,

1 dc into next stitch, ch1, sl st on top of last dc (like picot stitch, but with only 1 chain stitch instead of
3 chain stitches), 1 dc into the same stitch of previous row, * 1 dc into next stitch,

2 dc into next stitch, repeat from * 2 times; *1 tr into next stitch, 2 tr into next stitch, repeat
from * 2 times; 1 tr into next 3 stitches; 2 tr into next stitch, 1 tr into next stitch, 2 tr into next 2
stitches

Cut the yarn; hide all yarn ends on the wrong side of the work; shape the heart
Chain 2: Into second from the hook loop: 2 sc

2 hdc: 8 dc:
Work the stitches of second round into Work 2 dc sts into each back loop:
back loops:

24 sts altogether into back loops: And another 3 dc sts into the last loop:
Skip 1 stitch, sl st into next dc stitch:

Pull out a loop from the first front loop: Ch1, work 3 sc sts into the same loop:
2 hdc sts into next front loop: 2 dc into the next front loop:

Continue to stitch into front loops:

For the bottom tip of the heart, Ch1, guide the hook through the front loop of the last dc and the part of
this stitch right below the front loop, yarn over, pull the yarn through all 3 loops on the hook:

1 dc into the same front loop

of the previous round: The final treble stitch:
Cut the yarn, pull the end to the wrong side:

The wrong side with all yarn ends: Some shaping up is needed:
The best part about freeform crocheting is that you do not need to follow the pattern precisely, there
can be different number and different combination of sc, dc, hdc, tr and so on...
