CHAPTER 2
1. Introduction
The RTC402 is an electronic pedestrian traffic counting system designed for use in retail stores. The RTC sensors, located at each store entrance, capture customers entering and exiting. The sensors relay a signal to the RTC402 unit. The signal is then time-stamped and the data is recorded in memory for eventual retrieval and analysis. There are 2 models that customers must choose from: 1. 60 min model: Traffic count stored every 60 minutes. 2. 15 min model: Traffic count stored every 15 minutes.
There are 5 typical connectivity options that customers can choose from: 1. Direct Connect: The Point-of-Sale or Server computer is connected directly to the serial port on the RTC402 unit. 2. Stand Alone: Only sensors are connected to the RTC402 unit. The data is stored and viewed on the RTC402 unit and it not transferred or polled. 3. TCP/IP (external port server): The RTC402 unit is connected to the Systech Port Server using a serial connection. The Systech Port Server is then connected to the companys WAN/LAN network using a patch cable. The Systech Port Server can either have 1, 2, or 4 ports. 4. TCP/IP (integrated LAN): The RTC402 unit is connected to a Switch/Hub via a patch cable. 5. Modem option: The RTC402 unit is connected to an External Modem via a modem cable. If the phone line is a shared line, then the external modem is connected to line sharing device otherwise the External Modem is connected to the dedicated phone line.
8. A roll of electrical tape 9. A number of black and white tie-wraps 10. An analog or digital multi-meter 11. A 8 ft. (2.43 m) and a 12 ft. (3.65 m) ladder 12. A 50 ft. (15.23 m) and 100 ft. (30.47 m) fish tape (fiberglass rods are recommended)
This section ONLY applies to technicians that are commissioned by Prodco International.
1. Technicians need to call their dispatcher or Prodco International both on arrival and prior to leaving the job site. Failure to check IN and OUT may result in an incomplete installation. If you leave the job site, and you have not checked IN and OUT, then any return trip will be at no charge to Prodco International 2. Technicians must immediately report any incidents or damages that have occurred on the site 3. Technicians must respect the wishes and demands of the client within the guidelines of Prodco International. If this is unclear or if the client makes suggestions that deviate from the SOW please contact Prodco International before continuing with the installation 4. Technicians must ensure that the client signs all appropriate paper work such as Installation Sheet and Service Sheet and any surveys and/or forms as requested in your work order.
2. Prodco International support technicians have selected the optimum sensor type based on entrance type, accuracy requirements and store layout provided by the client. The available Prodco sensors are the following: Sensor Type

APPENDIX A
SENSOR INSTALLATION
Note:
Make sure that the door swing does not interfere with the sensor when a customer opens the door. In particular, verify that the door flange does not interfere with the operation of the sensor.
29
Mounting the Sensor eye directly into the door frame (or wall)
1. Drill one 15/32 in. (1.18 cm) hole at 54 in. (1.37 m) floor on one side of the wall (or door frame). 2. Pass the sensor eye directly into the hole. The sensor eye and door frame is displayed below.
3. Drill another 15/32 in. (1.18 cm) hole at 54 in. (1.37 m) from the floor on the other side of the door frame (or wall). The two sensor eyes must face each other. If the sensor eyes are not aligned, they will not work. 4. Pass the other sensor eye directly into the hole.
Mounting the Sensor eye to the wall (or door frame) using aluminum brackets
1. Drill a in. (0.635 cm) hole at 54 in. (1.37 m) from the floor on one side of the wall (or door frame). 2. Pass the sensor eye through the hole. 3. Remove the base plate from the aluminum brackets. 4. Use the aluminum bracket base to mark the location of the 2 holes. 5. Drill two 5/32 in. (0.31 cm) holes to the wall (or door frame). 6. Attach the aluminum bracket to the wall (or door frame)
30
Running the cable between the Sensor eye and the Sensor Control Module
Note:
Review the section below, Sensor Control Module Terminals for terminal connections.
1. Use electrical tape to secure the gray and blue sensor cable connectors.
2. Pass the sensor cables from the sensor eye location to the sensor control module. Leave extra cable in the wall (or doorframe) so that the sensor can be serviced at a later date in needed.
3. Attach the blue shielded, blue unshielded, gray shielded, and gray unshielded cables to the receiver/transmitter section of the sensor control module.
Running the cable between the Sensor Control Module and the RTC
Note:
Review the section below, Sensor Control Module Terminals for terminal connections.
1. Cut a piece of CAT-5 (CAT-5E, CAT-6) cable length that will cover the distance between the sensor control module and the RTC unit.
31
2. Connect one end of the CAT-5 (CAT-5E, CAT-6) cable to the +12V, Signal, Ground and count terminations of the sensor control module. 3. Connect the other end of the CAT-5 (CAT-5E, CAT-6) to a RJ23 connector using a crimping tool. 4. Run the CAT-5 (CAT-5E, CAT-6) cable from the sensor control module to the RTC unit.
32
The infrared image below shows how the sensor detects temperature differences between a person and the background. People may be hotter or colder than the background. If warmer they appear white, if colder they appear black. The initialization area is square on the floor whose width is approximately equal to the mounting height of the thermal sensor.
As shown on the next page, the sensor has two independent counting lines. When a person crosses a line in the direction of that count line, they are counted. Generally one line counts in, the other counts out. The arrows indicate direction of counting. The green line below counts people going right to left, whereas the blue line counts people going left to right. The installer will be able to configure and position and shape these counting lines for optimum performance.
33
The sensor requires a certain amount of time and space to detect a person entering the field of view. Ensure sufficient space is allowed between the edge of the field of view and the counting lines; this will ensure that a person is detected as a target before the line is crossed. This area is referred to as the initialization area. The exact requirement is dependent on the particular environment - walk tests are required for optimum configuration.
Avoid or be aware of the following situations when mounting the sensor: Static groups or very dense groups of people Line ups caused by obstructions Door security staff, floorwalkers, etc. Hanging signs, decorations, fans or other objects that will hinder the field of view Avoid mounting next to vibrating equipment or heat sources Avoid areas where machinery, lighting or other factors can affect the floor temperature Avoid mounting the counter over a doorway where the door opens into the field of view Be aware of reflections caused by large glass doors. Adjust count lines accordingly
34
2. The sensor should be placed on the ceiling directly above the area chosen. For a standard unit equipped with a lens for a 60 degree field of view, the mounting height should be anywhere from 8 ft. (2.5 m) to 15 ft. (4.5 m) high. 3. The sensor should be centered to cover this entrance area and the position of the counting lines should be able to capture all the people entering or leaving the area. A good rule of thumb to follow is that the width of the area covered will be approximately equal to the mounting height. If the width to be covered is larger than the mounting height, then you will require additional sensors. For more than one sensor, the sensors should be placed according to the following formula: (Divide the entrance width / # of sensors). This is the distance between sensors.
35
Summary of Practices
Make sure that you install the sensor base module with the terminal block facing the inside of the store. The terminal block must be square to the entrance.
1. Detach the sensor head from the sensor base module by first twisting it counterclockwise slightly and then gently pulling it apart. 2. Insert 2 screws to mount the sensor base module to the ceiling as shown below.
36
3. Running the cable between the Sensor Base Module and the RTC
Note:
Review the section below, Sensor Base Module Terminals for terminal connections.
1. Cut a piece of CAT-5 (CAT-5E, CAT-6) cable length that will cover the distance between the sensor base module and the RTC unit. 2. Connect one end of the CAT-5 (CAT-5E, CAT-6) cable to the +12V, Signal, Ground and Count Terminations of the sensor base module. 3. Connect the other end of the CAT-5 (CAT-5E, CAT-6) to a RJ23 connector using a crimping tool. 4. Run the CAT-5 (CAT-5E, CAT-6) cable from the sensor base module to the RTC unit.

have a serial connector, use a USB to Serial converter). 6. Proceed to chapter 6.4.7 (Configuring the TIS100 sensor) before continuing. 7. Once you have configured the sensor and saved your setting, exit the software, power down the sensor at the RTC402 unit and remove the setup module. 8. The setup module will not physically detach from the sensor while it is in the base. Again, turn the sensor slightly counterclockwise to unlock, pull the sensor away from the base, then detach the module from the sensor being careful not to damage the connecting pins or break off the tab. To do this: Press down from the topside of the connection (1). While doing the above, pull the locking tab of from the sensor (2). Once the module is unlocked, pull it up from the sensor (3).
TECH NOTE! Use caution when attaching and detaching the setup module; make sure not to damage the connecting pins or the locking tab Locking Tab

2. Place your laptop on the floor or table so that you can see the screen. 3. Test the thermal sensor by positioning yourself underneath the sensor. You will see a thermal image of yourself. This image shows the count lines of the sensor head. You might have to adjust the count lines of the sensor head to measure a particular entrance area. The count lines should only pick-up customers entering and leaving the entrance area and not moving in the store next to tables, racks, etc. 4. To adjust a count line, place the cursor over a count line and the cursor will change to a 4-way arrow. Click on the left mouse button and the line becomes dark blue. You can now change the length or angle of individual count lines. For example, to make a count line shorter, place the cursor over one of
41
the squares at either end of the count line. The cursor will create a square over the square on the count line. Click the left mouse button and keep it pressed. You can now resize the line with the mouse.
Note:
Do not move the count lines too close to the north (up) or south (down) edge. Do not place the count lines where the customers are moving around within a store, or around a rack or table, or outside the store, etc. Configure the count lines in the entranceway area so the sensor will only count customers entering or exiting the store. Leave as much initialization area as possible for when the customer enters or exits the zone to the time they hit the count line.

3. You may enter a description in the text field and turn Relay 1 and Relay 2 ON or OFF based on the client configuration table. Click Next to proceed.
4. You can now enter a unit height. Select next and then Finish to complete the wizard setup.
5. You will be asked if you wish to make the changes permanent, select Yes. 6. Click on the properties button on the menu bar and select the Lines Tab.
43
7. For both Line 1 and Line 2 you will be able to toggle Led 1 & 2 and Relay 1 & 2 ON or OFF based on the client configuration table above. A green check indicates that it is ON, and a red X means its OFF. 8. Click on Pulse Width for both Line 1 & 2 until they change to 200ms. 9. Click on Permanent and then click YES on the confirmation.
