- Ps. 89:2

THE LITURGY OF THE ORDINATION TO THE

SACRED ORDERS OF DEACONS AND
PRESBYTERS
IN THE SAME CELEBRATION

1
THE INTROIT
When the people are gathered, the Bishop approaches the altar with the ministers while the
entrance chant is sung. When he has arrived at the altar, after making a profound bow with the ministers,
the bishop venerates the altar with a kiss and incenses the cross and the altar. Then, with the ministers, he
goes to the chair.
When the entrance chant is concluded, the bishop and the faithful, standing, sign themselves with
the Sign of the cross, while the bishop, facing the people, says:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit.
The people reply:

Amen.
Then the bishop, extending his hands, greets the people, saying:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the
Lord Jesus Christ.
The people reply:

And with your spirit.

The Bishop briefly introduce the faithful to the Mass of the day.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, we gather this morning

with hearts full of gratitude for the special gift of the
priesthood that God will bestow on our brothers
whom the Spirit has chosen.
We praise the Lord,
who shepherds His people with great mercy
and compassion.

2
THE PENITENTIAL ACT
Then follows the penitential act, to which the bishop invites the faithful, saying:

Brethren (brothers and sisters),

let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to
celebrate the sacred mysteries.
A brief pause for silence follows. then all recite together the formula of general confession:

I confess to almighty God

and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
All strike their breast thrice, saying:

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault;
Then they continue:
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
Then the absolution by the Bishop follows:

May almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
The people reply:

Amen.

3
KYRIE ELEISON (sung)
GLORIA (sung)

COLLECT
When this hymn is concluded, the Bishop, with hands joined, says:

Let us pray.
[that the Church will continue the saving work of Christ]

And all pray in silence with the Bishop for a while.

Then the Bishop, with hands extended, says the collect prayer.

O God, who have willed

to provide shepherds for your people,
pour out a spirit of piety
and fortitude in your Church,
to make these, your servants,
worthy ministers at your altar
and strong but gentle champions of your Gospel.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
At the end of which the people acclaim:

Amen.

4
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
Then the reader goes to the ambo and reads the first reading, while all sit and listen.

Bài Trích Sách Tiên Tri Giêrêmia (1: 4-9)

Có lờ i ĐỨ C CHÚA phán vớ i tôi rằ ng:

"Trướ c khi cho ngươi thành hình trong dạ mẹ, Ta đã biết ngươi ;
ĐỨ C CHÚA phán vớ i tôi : "Đừ ng nói ngươi còn trẻ !
Ta sai ngươi đi đâu, ngươi cứ đi ;
Ta truyền cho ngươi nói gì, ngươi cứ nói.
Đừ ng sợ chúng, vì Ta ở vớ i ngươi để giả i thoát ngươi",
sấ m ngôn củ a ĐỨ C CHÚA.
Rồ i ĐỨ C CHÚA giơ tay chạ m vào miệng tôi và phán :
"Đây Ta đặ t lờ i Ta vào miệng ngươi.

To indicate the end of the reading, the reader acclaims:

Đó là Lời Chúa.
All reply:

Thanks be to God.
The psalmist or cantor sings or says the psalm, with the people making the response.

PSALM 23 “The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.”

5
After this, if there is to be a Second reading, a reader reads it from the ambo, as above.

A Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans Rm. 12: 4-8

For as in one body we have many parts,

and all the parts do not have the same function,
so we, though many, are one body in Christ
and individually parts of one another.

Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us,
let us exercise them: if prophecy,
in proportion to the faith;
if ministry, in ministering;
if one is a teacher, in teaching;
if one exhorts, in exhortation;
if one contributes, in generosity;
if one is over others, with diligence;
if one does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

To indicate the end of the reading, the reader acclaims:

The Word of the Lord.

All reply:

Thanks be to God.

There follows the alleluia or another chant laid down by the rubrics, as the liturgical time requires.
Meanwhile, if incense is used, the priest puts some into the thurible. after this, the Deacon who is to
proclaim the gospel, bowing profoundly before the Bishop, asks for the blessing, saying in a low voice:

Your blessing, Bishop.

The Bishop says in a low voice:

6
May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips,
that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well,
in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.
The Deacon signs himself with the Sign of the cross and replies:
Amen.

If, however, a Deacon is not present, the priest, bowing before the altar, says quietly:
Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God,
that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel.

The Deacon, or the priest, then proceeds to the ambo, accompanied, if appropriate, by ministers with
incense and candles. there he says:

The Lord be with you.

The people reply:

And with your spirit.

The deacon continues:

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Jn. 15: 9- 17

As the Father loves me, so I also love you.

Remain in my love.
If you keep my commandments,
you will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my Father’s commandments
and remain in his love.
“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you
and your joy may be complete.

7
This is my commandment:
love one another as I love you.
No one has greater love than this,
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

You are my friends if you do what I command you.

I no longer call you slaves,
because a slave does not know what his master is doing.

I have called you friends,

because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.

It was not you who chose me,

but I who chose you and appointed you to go
and bear fruit that will remain,
so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.

This I command you: love one another.

And, at the same time, he makes the Sign of the cross on the book and on his forehead, lips, and breast.
At the end of the gospel, the Deacon, or the priest, acclaims:

The Gospel of the Lord.

All reply:

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Then he kisses the book, saying quietly:

Through the words of the Gospel may our sins be wiped

away.

Then, the Bishop says:
May God who has begun the good work in you bring it
to fulfillment.
And the elect for the diaconate return to his place.

EXAMINATION OF THE CANDIDATES FOR THE

Then, the elect for the priesthood alone rises and stands before the Bishop who questions him saying:

to fulfilment.
A deacon says:

Let us stand.

All stand, and the bishop, without his miter, invites the people to pray.

LITANY OF THE SUPPLICATION

16
Commentator: Alone the priest cannot successfully fulfill his ministry, so together we ask
the assistance of the heavenly host to be with and stay with our candidates.

The Bishop says:

My dear people, let us pray that God the all-powerful

Father will mercifully pour out the gifts of heaven on
these servants of his, whom in his kindness he has
chosen to be members of the Sacred Orders of the
Diaconate and Priesthood.
A deacon says:

Let us kneel.
All kneel. The candidates for Diaconate and Priesthood prostrate themselves and the Litany is sung.

LITANY OF THE SAINTS (sung)

After the Litany, the Bishop alone stands and, with his hands joined says:

Lord God,
mercifully hear our prayers
and graciously accompany with your help
what we undertake by virtue of our office.
Sanctify by your blessing these men we present,
for in our judgement we believe them worthy
to exercise sacred ministries.
Through Christ our Lord.
All reply:

Amen.

17
Commentator: Please all stand.
All stand. The candidates for priesthood return to their places, and the ordination of the deacon begins.

LAYING ON OF HANDS FOR THE DEACON

Commentator: We now come to the most solemn part of the ceremony of Ordination to
the Diaconate. Through the ancient symbolic gesture of the Laying On of
Hands which has come down to us from Old Testament times, our brother
here present will become deacon. The Bishop will then pray the solemn
prayer of Ordination. Kindly remain standing and let us keep a respectful
silence throughout this ceremony.

The candidate for the Order of the Diaconate proceeds to the Bishop, where he kneels before him. The
bishop lays his hands on the head in silence.

PRAYER FOR CONSECRATION OF DEACON

Then, the candidate kneels before the bishop. The Bishop, not wearing the miter, with his hands extended
over him, he says the prayer of consecration:

Almighty God,
be present with us by your power.
You are the source of all honor,
you assign each to his rank,
you give each his ministry.

You remain unchanged,

but you watch over all creation and make it new through
you Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord:
he is your Word, your power, and your wisdom.
You foresee all things in your eternal providence
18
and make due provision for every age.
You make the Church, Christ’s body,
grow to its full stature as a new greater temple.
You enrich it with every kind of grace
And perfect it with a diversity of members
to serve the whole body
in a wonderful pattern of unity.
You established a threefold ministry of worship
and service for the glory of your name.
As ministers of your tabernacle
you chose the sons of Levi
and gave them your blessing
as their everlasting inheritance.

In the first days of the Church

under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit
the apostles of your son
appointed seven men of good repute
to assist them in the daily ministry,
so that they themselves might be more free
for prayer and preaching.
By prayer and the laying on of hands
the apostles entrusted to these chosen men
the ministry of serving at tables.

Lord,
look with favor on these servants of yours,
19
whom we now dedicate to the office of deacon,
to minister at your holy Altar.

Lord,
send forth upon them the Holy Spirit,
that they may be strengthened
by the gift of your sevenfold grace
to carry out faithfully the work of the ministry.

May they excel in every virtue:

in love that is sincere,
in concern for the sick and the poor,
in assuming authority, in self-discipline,
and in holiness of life.

May their conduct exemplify your commandments and

lead your people to imitate their purity of life. May they
remain strong and steadfast in Christ, giving to the world
the witness of a pure conscience.
May they in this life imitate your Son,
who came not to be served but to serve,
and one day reign with him in heaven.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God,
forever and ever.
All reply (may be sung):

20
Amen.

INVESTITURE WITH STOLE AND DALMATIC

Commentator: Please be seated. The new deacons will now be vested in dalmatic and
stole, the vestment proper to their office. After this the Bishop will
hand them the Book of the Gospel, symbol of the word of God that
they will proclaim.
All are seated. The bishop wearing his miter sits and the newly ordained deacon goes back to his place at
the foot of the sanctuary. A priest assists the newly-ordained deacon in putting the symbols of the office:
the stole and dalmatic.

HANDING ON OF THE BOOK OF THE GOSPELS

Commentator: The handing on of the Book of the Gospels signifies the office of the
Deacon to proclaim the Gospel in liturgical celebrations and to preach
the faith of the Church in word and in deed.
The newly ordained goes to the bishop and kneels before him. The Bishop places the Book of the
Gospels in the hands of the newly-ordained deacon and says:
The Bishop says:

Receive the Gospel of Christ, whose herald you have

become. Believe what you read, teach what you believe,
and practice what you teach.
The newly ordained deacon returns to his place.

ORDINATION OF PRIESTS

Commentator: The Bishop will now ordain the candidate for Ordination to the
Priesthood. All please rise.

21
All stand. The elect for the Order of the Sacred Priesthood come forward. The Bishop, after putting aside
the miter, with hands joined, prays over the elect and says:

My dear people, let us pray that God the all-powerful

Father may pour out abundantly the gifts of heaven on
this, his servant, whom he has chosen for the office of
priest.

LAYING ON OF HANDS
Commentator: We now come to the most solemn part of the ceremony of Ordination
to the Priesthood. Through the ancient symbolic gesture of the Laying
On of Hands which has come down to us from Old Testament times,
our deacons here present will become priests. The Bishop will then
pray the solemn prayer of Ordination. Kindly remain standing and let
us keep a respectful silence throughout this ceremony.

The Deacon invites the people to be seated.

The elect goes to the bishop and kneels before him. The bishop wearing his miter lays his hands on the
elect’s head in silence. Then all the priests present lay their hands upon the head of the elect, without
saying anything.
After the laying on of hands, the priests remain alongside the bishop until the end of the Prayer of
Ordination.

PRAYER OF ORDINATION
Then, the Bishops says:

Draw near, O Lord, holy Father,

almighty and eternal God,
author of human dignity
it is you who apportion all graces.

22
Through you everything progresses;
through you all things are made to stand firm.
To form a priestly people
you appoint ministers of Christ your Son
by the power of the Holy Spirit,
arranging them in different orders.
Already in the earlier covenant
offices arose, established through mystical rites:
when you set Moses and Aaron over your people
to govern and sanctify them,
you chose men next in rank and dignity
to accompany them and assist them in their task.

So too in the desert you implanted the spirit of Moses

in the hearts of seventy wise men;
and with their help he ruled your people
with greater ease.

So also upon the sons of Aaron

you poured an abundant share of their father’s plenty,
that the number of the priests prescribed by the Law
might be sufficient for the sacrifices of the tabernacle,
which were a shadow of the good
things to come.

But in these last days, holy Father,

you sent your Son into the world, Jesus,

23
who is Apostle and High Priest of our confession.

Through the Holy Spirit

he offered himself to you as a spotless victim;
and he made his Apostles,
consecrated in the truth, sharers in his mission.
You provided them also with companions
To proclaim and carry out the work of salvation
throughout the whole world.

And now we beseech you, Lord, in our weakness,

to grant us this helper that we need
to exercise the Priesthood
that comes from the Apostles.

Grant, we pray, Almighty Father,

to this your servant the dignity of the Priesthood; renew
deep within him the Spirit of holiness;
may he henceforth possess this office,
which comes from you,
O God, and is next in rank to the office of Bishop;
and by the example of his manner of life,
may he instill right conduct.

May he be a worthy co-worker with our Order,

so that by his preaching and through the grace
of the Holy Spirit the words of the Gospel
may bear fruit in human hearts
24
and reach even to the ends of the earth.

Together with us,

may he be a faithful steward of your mysteries,
so that your people
may be renewed in the waters of rebirth
and nourished from your altar;
so that sinners may be reconciled
and the sick raised up.
May he be joined with us, Lord,
In imploring your mercy for the people
entrusted to his care and for all the world.

And so may the full number of the nations,

gathered together in Christ,
be transformed into your one people
and made perfect in your Kingdom.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever.

All reply:

Amen.

25
INVESTITURE WITH STOLE AND CHASUBLE

After the prayer, all are seated. The Bishop wearing his miter sits and the newly ordained priests go back
to their places at the foot of the sanctuary. The concelebrating priests return to their places but some of
them assist and accompany the newly-ordained in putting the symbols of the office: the stole and
chasuble.

Commentator: Please be seated. The newly ordained priest will now put on the chasuble
and the stole, the liturgical vestments proper of priests.

If possible, an appropriate hymn is sung.

ANOINTING OF HANDS
AND HANDING OVER OF THE BREAD AND WINE

Commentator: It was through the power of the Holy Spirit that the Father anointed the
Lord Jesus. Through the fragrant Chrism, Jesus preserves the newly
ordained so that he may sanctify the Christian people and offer sacrifice to
God. The bishop will now anoint with Holy Chrism the palms of our
new priest to show that he is God’s special channel of blessings in the
sanctification of His people.

Each newly-ordained priest goes to the Bishop and kneels before him. The Bishop then anoints each of
their palms of the newly ordained Priests with holy Chrism; the Bishop says:

The Lord Jesus Christ, whom the Father anointed

with the Holy Spirit and power, guard and preserve
you that you may sanctify the Christian people and
offer sacrifice to God.
Then the bishop and the newly Ordained wash their hands.

26
Commentator: Offering of the Eucharistic sacrifice for the people of God is the liturgical
duty of the presbyteral office. The bishop will present to the new priest the
gifts of bread and wine in sacred vessels.

Next, parents of the newly-ordained present to the Bishop the paten with bread and the chalice containing
the wine mixed with water, for the celebration of the Mass. A deacon receives them and brings them to
the Bishop, who places them in the hand of each of the newly ordained Priests as they kneel before him,
saying:

Receive the oblation of the holy people to be offered to

God. Understand what you do, imitate what you
celebrate, and conform your life to the mystery of the
Lord’s Cross.

KISS OF PEACE
Commentator: The ordination rite concludes with the Kiss of Peace. The bishop, and all
the concelebrating priests will give the fraternal kiss of peace to the newly
ordained to signify their enlistment into the rank of God’s ordained
ministers.

To seal the admittance of the newly ordained into the fraternity, the Bishop gives the deacon the sign of
peace, then to the newly-ordained priest saying:

Peace be with you.

The newly-ordained responds:

And with your spirit.

Following the greeting of the Bishop, the assisting deacons will likewise give the fraternal kiss to the
newly ordained. All deacons present follows to give the fraternal kiss.
Likewise, all the concelebrating priests present give the fraternal kiss to the newly ordained priest as a
sign of their being one in the Order of Priests.
After the fraternal kiss, the newly Ordained go to the place prepared for them.

27
Then the liturgical celebration continues in the usual manner.

THE PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
28
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

HYMN
The Priest, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it slightly raised above the altar
with both hands, saying in a low voice:

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness we have received
the bread we offer you:
fruit of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become for us
the bread of life.
Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal.
The preparation of the chalice is omitted since the service deacon has earlier prepared it.
The Priest then takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a
low voice:

29
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,
for through your goodness we have received
the wine we offer you:
fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it
will become our spiritual drink.
Then he places the chalice on the corporal.
After this, the Priest, bowing profoundly, says quietly:

With humble spirit and contrite heart

may we be accepted by you, O Lord,
and may our sacrifice in your sight this day
be pleasing to you, Lord God.
The incensation of the Gifts, the Altar, and the Cross. Then the main presider, the concelebrating Priests,
and the People.

COMMENTATOR: (Before the deacons reach the front of the sanctuary.)

Please rise.
Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying quietly:

Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity

and cleanse me from my sin.

Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining his hands, he says:

Pray, brothers and sisters,

that my sacrifice and yours
may be acceptable to God,
the almighty Father.
The people reply:

30
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
for the praise and glory of his name,
for our good, and the good of all his holy Church.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

Holy Father, whose son chose to wash the disciples’ feet
and so set us an example,
accept, we pray, the oblations of our service,
and grant that, offering ourselves as a spiritual sacrifice,
we may be filled with a spirit of humility and zeal.
Through Christ our lord.

PREFACE

through the laying on of hands.

He chooses them to lead your holy people in charity,

and strengthen them with the Sacraments.

As they give up their lives for you

and for the salvation of their brothers and sisters,
they strive to be conformed to the image of Christ himself
and offer you a constant witness of faith and love.

And so, Lord, with all the Angels and Saints,

we, too, give you thanks, as in exultation we acclaim:

At the end of the Preface he joins his hands and concludes the Preface with the people, singing or saying
aloud:

SANCTUS (sung)

Commentator: Please kneel.

32
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER III
The Bishop, with hands extended, says:
You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you
have created rightly gives you praise,
for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power
and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things
and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a
people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its
setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.
He joins his hands and, holding them extended over the offerings, says:

Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you: by the same

Spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought
to you for consecration,
He joins his hands and makes the Sign of the Cross once over the bread and chalice together, saying:

that they may become the Body + and Blood of your Son
our Lord Jesus Christ,
He joins his hands.

at whose command we celebrate these mysteries.

In the formulas that follow, the words of the Lord should be pronounced clearly and distinctly, as the
nature of these words requires.

For on the night he was betrayed

He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he himself took bread, and, giving you thanks,

33
he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his
disciples, saying:
He bows slightly.
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU,
AND EAT OF IT,
FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten, and genuflects in adoration.
After this, he continues:

In a similar way, when supper was ended,

He takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he took the chalice, and, giving you thanks, he said the

blessing, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:
He bows slightly.

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR

THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD
OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH
WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.

DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in adoration.

Then he says:

The mystery of faith.

34
ACCLAMATION (sung)
Then the Bishop, with hands extended, says:

Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the

saving Passion of your Son, his wondrous Resurrection
and Ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to
his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this
holy and living sacrifice.

Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church and,

recognizing the sacrificial Victim by whose death you
willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are
nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled
with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in
Christ.

[Concelebrant 1:]
May he make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we
may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially
with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with
Saint Joseph, her most chaste spouse, with your blessed
Apostles and glorious martyrs and with all the Saints, on
whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for
unfailing help.
[Concelebrant 2:]
May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord,
advance the peace and salvation of all the world.

35
Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim
Church on earth, with your servant, Francis, our Pope,
and Honesto our Bishop, the Order of Bishops, these
your servants, who has been ordained today as Priest for
the Church, all the clergy, and the entire people you have
gained for your own.
[Concelebrant 3:]
Listen graciously to the prayers of this family, whom you
have summoned before you: in your compassion, O
merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children
scattered throughout the world.

To our departed brothers and sisters, and to all who were

pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind
admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy
forever the fullness of your glory
He joins his hands.
through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on
the world all that is good.
DOXOLOGY
He takes the paten with the host and gives the chalice to the deacon, raising both, he says:
Through him, and with him, and in him, O God,
almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory
and honor is yours, for ever and ever.
The people acclaim:
Amen. (to be sung)

36
COMMUNION RITE
After the chalice and paten have been set down, the Bishop, with hands joined, says:

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching,

we dare to say:
He extends his hands and, together with the people, continues:

Our Father (to be sung)

With hands extended, the Bishop alone continues, saying:

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously

grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin and safe from all
distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of
our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He joins his hands.

The people conclude the prayer, acclaiming:

For the Kingdom… (to be sung)

Then the Bishop, with hands extended, says aloud:

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles:

Peace I leave you, my peace I give you;
look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church,
and graciously grant her peace
and unity in accordance with your will.

37
He joins his hands.
Who live and reign for ever and ever.
The people respond:
Amen.
The Bishop, turned towards the people, extending and then joining his hands, adds:

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

The people respond:
And with your spirit.
Then the Deacon faces the people and says:
Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
The newly ordained may go to their parents to give them the sign of peace.

LAMB OF GOD (sung)

The bishop places a small piece in the chalice, saying quietly:
May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our lord
Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it.
Then the bishop, with hands joined, says quietly:
Lord Jesus Christ, son of the living God, who, by the will
of the Father and the work of the holy spirit, through
your Death gave life to the world, free me by this, your
most holy Body and Blood, from all my sins and from
every evil; keep me always faithful to your
commandments, and never let me be parted from you.

Commentator: Please all kneel.

38
All kneel. The bishop genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the paten or above
the chalice, while facing the minister, says aloud:
Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away
the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the
supper of the Lamb.
And together with the minister he adds once:
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my
roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

The bishop then says quietly:

May the Body of Christ keep me safe for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Body of Christ. Then he takes the chalice and says quietly:
May the Blood of Christ keep me safe for eternal life.
And he reverently consumes the Blood of Christ.
COMMENTATOR: The newly ordained priests will now give communion first to
their parents. Thereafter, they will proceed to their Communion
stations.

After this, the raises a host slightly, showing it to communicant and saying:
The Body of Christ.
The communicant replies:
Amen.
When the distribution of Communion is over, the Priest or a Deacon or an Acolyte purifies the paten over
the Chalice and also the Chalice itself. While he carries out the purification, the priest says quietly:

What has passed our lips as food, O Lord, may we possess

in purity of heart, that what has been given to us in time
may be our healing for eternity.
A sacred silence may be observed for a while. Then the Bishop may return to the chair. If appropriate,
sacred silence may be observed for a while, or a psalm or other canticle of praise or a hymn may be sung.

Commentator: (as the bishop rises) …Please rise.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

39
Then, with hands joined, the bishop says:
Let us pray.
After a brief pause for silence, unless silence has just been observed, he extends his hands and says:

Grant, O Lord,
to your servants, whom you have replenished
with heavenly food and drink,
that, for the sake of your glory
and the salvation of believers,
they may be found faithful as ministers of the Gospel,
of the sacraments and of charity.
Through Christ our lord.
The people respond:
Amen.
The newly ordained priest and deacons give their words of thanks.

Commentator: Please be seated. We shall now listen to some words of thanks from
our Newly Ordained.
COMMENTATOR: (After…)
Let us now listen to the Very Rev. Fr. Chris McPhee, MSC the Provincial
Superior of MSC Australia, for some words.

HYMN TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

All standing. Then, the bishop incenses the image of OLSH.

Commentator: Please stand as we sing a hymn in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and a hymn to the Sacred Heart.

HAIL ADMIRABLE (To be sung)
