TOP GUN: MAVERICK : BREAK THE CURE OF THE BAD SEQUEL

By: Fionita Valent Nanda Sabili

At the beginning of his career as an actor, Tom Cruise had starred in an action drama
genre film, entitled Top Gun (1986). When it was released in May 1986, Top Gun was a huge
success, earning $358 million (approximately IDR5.2 trillion) from a budget of $15 million
(approximately IDR218 billion). However, from this success, Paramount Pictures did not
immediately work on the sequel to this film.
Unexpectedly, Paramount Pictures has just released a sequel to Top Gun, 36 years after
the release of the first film. The sequel, entitled Top Gun: Maverick, brings back Cruise and Val
Kilmer. In addition to the two of them, the film was enlivened by a new cast, including Miles
Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and other actors.
Top Gun: Maverick tells the story of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who is still a captain
after more than 30 years of service in the United States Navy. One day, Maverick is ordered back
to TOPGUN to train a group of young pilots and prepare them for a difficult mission.
For those who have watched the first film, what you immediately catch from Top Gun:
Maverick is that this film really pays homage to the first film. Quite a lot of elements from the
first film are carried back into the sequel. Even from the opening scene of the sequel, you can
already feel the same vibe as the opening scene in the first film. The opening scene of Top Gun:
Maverick shows Maverick who is trying to help so he doesn't listen to his superior's orders. As a
result, he was scolded by his superiors and told to go to TOPGUN. Pretty similar to the opening
scene of the first film, right?
In addition, various iconic moments from the first film are re-created in the sequel,
including when Maverick flies in an upside-down plane; moments of exercise on the beach; the
moment when Maverick says, “Talk to me, Goose.”; and various other moments that are
guaranteed to make you nostalgic with the first film.
It is undeniable that the first Top Gun film featured fighter aircraft attractions that were
very impressive at that time. But in terms of story, the film is arguably not too special. It's no
secret that quite a lot of sequel films can't be better than the first film. However, Top Gun:
Maverick managed to break the curse!
Anyone who has seen the first film will agree that Top Gun: Maverick is definitely
superior. The storyline shown in the sequel is much more interesting and the attraction of the
fighter plane is also much more tense. The fans' waiting for 36 years really paid off perfectly. In
terms of story, the conflict that Top Gun: Maverick shows is more complex than the first film.
Moreover, the bad events that happened 36 years ago became the basis of conflict for the story in
the sequel. The sequel also has a more emotional storyline, especially for those of you who still
remember the first film.

For the size of the film produced in the 1980s, the first Top Gun film managed to show
scenes of stunning fighter aircraft attractions. After watching the first film, you are guaranteed to
be more impressed by the various scenes of fighter aircraft attractions shown in Top Gun:
Maverick. Moreover, Maverick and his team face missions that are far more dangerous in the
sequel.
In the sequel, Maverick and his team get a mission to blow up a uranium enrichment
facility. However, they must face difficult terrain in order to reach and exit their target location.
Even from the training period, you can watch various cool and thrilling fighter aircraft attraction
scenes. The audience can feel the thrilling sensation during the fighter plane scene because of the
placement of the camera angle that is so right. The camera angle makes the audience feel the
excitement and thrill of being in the pilot's seat, just like Maverick and his team. Top Gun:
Maverick proves that you can get the sensation of watching 3D movies without wearing 3D
glasses.
There is no doubt that Top Gun: Maverick is a complete package for those of you who
want to experience various sensations in just one film. You can feel nostalgic, emotional, and the
sensation of being a fighter pilot while watching this film.
