POST-LAB QUESTIONS Name:

Sketch out some answers and check Lab stream:
them before you leave the lab. Date:

1. Just use arrows to the structure as answers.

(a) Which part of the molecule is the “dimethylamino” group?

(b) Which functional group is most responsible for making methyl orange water-soluble?

2. Determine which compound (dimethylaniline or the diazonium salt) is the limiting

reagent in the synthesis of the azo dye by answering the following questions.

Number of moles of N,N-dimethylaniline = mol.

Number of moles of the diazonium salt (assume that all of the sulfanilic acid is converted the
diazonium salt) = mol.

What is the stoichiometry between N,N-dimethylaniline, sulfanilic acid and methyl orange?

Therefore is the limiting reagent.

36 – Experiment 2

3. How many moles of product did you make? Show your working.

The mass of my product was g

The molecular weight of the product is g/mol.

Therefore the number of moles of product was mol.

4. Calculate the reaction yield.

The stoichiometry between the limiting reagent and the product is (from
Q2).

Therefore, the theoretical maximum number of moles of the product is mol.

The actual number of moles of product was mol (as calculated in Q3).

Therefore, the reaction yield was % (use 1 d.p.)

5. Draw out the full Lewis structure of the diazonium salt. Make sure it is clear which of the
two nitrogen atoms bears the positive charge AND where the electrons lie around the
sulfonate group. Note: the sulfur does not obey the octet rule but the other atoms do.
