1. The diagram below shows the graph y = f ( x) .

Sketch, on separate diagrams, each of the following graphs, showing the coordinates of
the two change points and the y-intercept, as shown on the diagram above.
(a) y = 3f ( x) [2]
(b) y = f ( 2 x)
1
[2]
(c) y = −f ( x) [2]

2. Sketch the following graphs on separate diagrams.

(a) y = ( x + a)3 , a  0 [3]
(b) y = x3 − b, b  0 [3]

3. Given that g( x) = x 2 − 2 x + 4 ,
(a) Find the equation of the curve, y = h(x), obtained by translating the curve y = g( x)
horizontally 1 unit in the negative x direction. [2]
(b) Find the equation of the curve, y = f(x), obtained by stretching the curve y = h(x)
parallel to the y-axis with scale factor 2. [2]

4. f ( x) = 14 (2 x − 7)(2 x − 1)
Express f(x) in the completed square form, ( x + a) 2 + b . Hence describe the
transformation that map y = ( x + a )2 onto y = f ( x) . [3]

5. (a) Sketch the graph y = . [2]
x

(b) Hence sketch the graph of y = on a separate diagram. Show the
x+2
coordinates of any points where the graph cuts the coordinate axes. [3]

6. (a) Given that f ( x) = ( x − 2)( x −1)( x + 2) , sketch the graphs of y = f ( x) and

y = f ( x −1) on the same axes. [4]
(b) Use algebra to find the x-coordinates of the points where the graphs intersect.
[4]

7. (a) Sketch the graph of y = f ( x) , where f ( x) = ( x + 1)2 (2 − x) .

Show the coordinates of the points where the graph cuts the coordinate
axes. [2]
(b) Hence sketch the graph of y = f (2 x) , on a separate diagram, showing the
coordinates of the points where the graph cuts the coordinate axes. [3]
(c) Find the equation of the graph y = f (2 x) in the form
y = Ax3 + Bx 2 + Cx + D . [3]
