Backup policy including Storage Snapshots
Best Practice based on 2 jobs 3PAR  Nimble

Create a Snapshot-only Veeam Jobs.

• Create 1 Job selecting the DataStore
• Schedule it every 1h and only during business hour
• To minimize the primary storage utilization, keep snapshots for less than 2 days (3-6% capacity)

Create a Backup with Snapshot retention Veeam Jobs.

• Create 1 Job for each DataStore and select StoreOnce Catalyst as target
• Configure Veeam for using HW snapshot inside the backup job
• Schedule it every night, make a weekly Virtual-Synthetic-Full and retain 8 weeks

Benefits:
• Most restore operations occur on save-set younger than 2 days:
Ø Make super fast IVMR, or Granular restore from an Hardware Snapshot Blog
• A few restore operations occur on save-set older than 2 days: See the Veeam Blog:
Ø Make fast restore from StoreOnce daily backup https://www.veeam.com/blog/hpe-hardware-
snapshot-orchestration-integrated-
• Rarely there are restore requests for primary array catastrophic issue: feature.html

Ø Make fast restore from the last StoreOnce daily backup

Option #1 - Catalyst powered Veeam backup-replication
Backup-Copy-Job: Direct Catalyst write over WAN (Preferred)
Benefit: Higher WAN dedup, Faster, Multi-stream

• Leverages on Catalyst Source-side-dedupe  over WAN
1. Excellent Dedupe over WAN
NEW: Veeam 9.5 enables additional Catalyst Compression and
Checksum.
2. Multistream process (per VM) for higher bandwidth utilization
3. Scales to WAN utilization over 1,000 Mb/s (physical)
• For restoring data in DR scenario, configure an additional Veeam
Gateway at the target-side. WAN
Catalyst source side
• Supports heterogeneous backup repositories at Source site.  ü Deduplication
StoreOnce is required at destination site only. ü Compression
Good option also for Remote offices consolidation. ü Checksum

• Licensing:
Ø Does not require StoreOnce Replication StoreOnce , or
any Legacy Repository
Ø Requires Veeam Enterprise
67
Option #2 - Traditional Veeam backup-replication process
Backup-Copy-Job: Gateway to Gateway communication

• Generally less efficient than using Catalyst deduplication
1. Less efficient WAN utilization - Longer time to replicate
2. Install Veeam WAN-Accelerators to reduce bandwidth.
It requires proper CPU, RAM, SSD.
3. WAN-Accelerator scales up to 100 Mb/s (1/10 than Catalyst)
and produces lower data traffic reduction.
• Keeps all Veeam health-check and  maintenance tasks
local to the target site
• Supports any repository type (Catalyst, NAS, SAN…)
WAN
• Licensing:
Ø Does not require StoreOnce Replication
Ø Requires Veeam Enterprise-Plus for WAN Accelerator
