Umzali Civils is an industry leader in Civil Engineering, Road
Construction and Rehabilitation works.

Umzali Civils has been in construction for the past 22 years and
has completed projects that encompass the full spectrum of civil
engineering services. These include road construction, infrastructure
development, parking area construction, road rehabilitation, bulk
earthworks and surfacing.

Our site management teams are dynamic, skilled and have very good
experience in all facets of civil engineering construction. We take pride
in delivering successful projects on time, within budget and to the
highest quality standards.

We have a large plant holding that ensures capacity for and continuity
of all projects, from small to large. A rigorous company-wide training
regime not only ensures quality at all levels, but effectively up-skills
and uplifts our staff, local population and sub-contractors. Our clients
include governments, local authorities, corporate groups and property
developers.

OHSAS 18001 HEALTH & SAFETY
POLICY
Umzali Civils has established a Health and Safety
Management System designed to comply with
the requirements of the OHSAS 18001 standard in
accordance with company policy.
The Health & Safety Manager will be responsible for
ensuring implementation and maintenance of the
system and reports directly to the applicable Contracts
Director.
The Company is committed to complying with all
applicable health and safety legislation, regulations
and any industry-based best practices. To this end the
Company has produced and will maintain a register
of legislation and has subscribed to a third-party
organisation to ensure that all new and updated items
of legislation are controlled on a continual basis.
The Company is committed to continual improvement
and will set itself health and safety-related targets and
objectives. These targets and objectives will, where
possible, be quantitative. The targets and objectives
will be reviewed at least annually and will be modified
from time to time to affect a process of continual
improvement. Targets and objectives established will
cover all aspects of the Company’s activities and will
aim to improve the health and safety performance of
the Company.
The Company will implement, maintain and
communicate this policy to all employees and will
ensure that all subcontractors used by the Company
are fully aware of this policy. This policy will be made
available to all subcontractors and the public.
The policy will be reviewed at least annually.
The Health and Safety Management System
established by the Company is designed to comply
with the requirements of the OHSAS 18001 standard
and is appropriate to the nature and scale of all its
activities. This policy will be reviewed on a regular basis
to ensure that it remains relevant and appropriate to
the activities of Umzali Civils.

ISO 9001:2000 QUALITY POLICY
It is the policy of Umzali Civils (Pty) Ltd to maintain
a quality system designed to meet the needs and
expectations of customers and requirements of ISO
9001:2000, and to adopt and implement the quality
principle of ‘Right First Time’ during the execution of
Civil engineering projects.
We believe that a policy of quality assurance is
necessary in order to guarantee our customers a
consistently high level of service that fully meets their
requirements.
To this end quality manuals have been formulated and
will be the main guide to achieving and maintaining
a safe and high quality service. All personnel are
responsible for the quality of their own work. All
employees will make themselves familiar with the
systems and the procedures laid down in these
manuals and are responsible for implementing them
during the appropriate operations.
Management undertake to provide the resources and
training necessary to ensure that all obligations under
the standard can be met. The system dictates that
where problems do arise, they must be dealt with in an
efficient and professional manner. The quality system
will be continually monitored and updated where
necessary.
The quality policy will be prominently displayed
ensuring that all personnel are fully conversant with
the quality aims of the Company. The policy is publicly
available and is on the Company’s website.
The management of Umzali Civils (Pty) Ltd will strive
to continuously improve the quality management
system and by doing so improve the service offered by
the company. To this end the management will clearly
define quality objectives and ensure their continuing

PROJECTS

Slent Road (DR1123)

Slent Road (DR1123) was a 10km rebuild with a 1.5km reseal as the
existing gravel road was in poor condition. The seal was a 19mm
Cape Seal, the road was horizontally and vertically re-aligned and
all sub-base was cement stabilized. Sealing in Winter presented
a challenge, but with good planning the seal was successfully
completed in August 2017.

Some interesting facts of the Slent Road

rebuild:

• 2 320m of subsoil pipes laid.

• Total fill volume: 41 384.4m3
• Total cubes spoiled: 31 167.5m3
• G5 subbase imported and processed/
stabilized: 18 417.3m3
• G2 basecourse imported and processed:
13 642.5m3
• Total Cape Seal build: 97 742.6m2
• Total cubes concrete poured: 1 338.2m3

R44 (MR27) Klapmuts to Stellenbosch

The R44 project was mainly a reseal contract with two major
widenings to be built – the Kromme Rhee and Muldersvlei
intersections. The seal was a Triple seal with SR1 (rubber
technology) used as a tack coat. Major intersections were asphalt-
overlaid using AR1 Asphalt, with more than 10 000 tons used.
The whole road also got a “facelift” with all-new road signs. Some
concrete-lined drains were built to address storm water runoff.

Klein D’Aria Earthworks

This is a R2 million Bulk Earthwork Project situated in Durbanville
just off Jip de Jager Drive. The scope of work was to clear the site,
cut to stockpile 6000m3 of material and cut to spoil off site 14000m3
of material. The programme spanned 4 weeks and was completed
on time.

Val de Vie Evergreen

This project includes the construction and civil engineering services
for 513 Residential Units within Val de Vie Estate.

The Evergreen precinct is enclosed within 332 000m2 as above area

/ 33,2Ha.

The scope of works includes approximately 5km of roads to be

covered with paving / asphalt and kerbs.

All major services to be installed – 5km Water / 6km Sewer /

Irrigation / Subsoils and Stormwater / Mass Earthworks of
80 000m3 generated.

Project Duration = 13 months.

Val de Vie Levendal

This project includes the construction of 3 sections of main road
within the Val de Vie Estate which connect all precincts and join into
the new Bergrivier Gate house on west side of Bergrivier.

Levendal Spine Access = 1200m including New Bridge / Spine

Access Road = 1650m and the Pearl Valley Link Road = 560m.

The three main roads were covered with paving/asphalt and kerbs.

All major services to be installed – Water + Chambers/ Sewer /

Irrigation / Subsoils and Stormwater and Culverts/ Mass Earthworks
and bridge fills generated

Spine Access - Project Value = R 77,12m including VAT &

contingencies / Project Duration = 12 months.

Levendal Spine - Project Value = R 30,361m including VAT &

contingencies / Project Duration = 4 months.
