Most people claim that social networking has a huge impact

on our intepersonal relationships and has changed the way
we communicate with people. Has social networking
improved the quality of relationships in society? Discuss the
positive as well as the negative aspects giving examples.
In contemporary societies the emergence of the internet and mass media has undeniably
changed our lives. This is the reason why a considerable amount of people claim that social
networking has influenced our intepersonal relationships greatly. Some people advocate the
change the internet has brought to the way we communicate with people, while others
condemn it. However in order for us to gain a better insight into this issue it is of great
importance that we examine its positive and negative aspects.

One the one hand no one can deny that social networking has offered us a great deal of
advantages that make their presence cognizable in our everyday lives. First and foremost
social media provides us with a wide range of information that is also easily and rapidly
accessible. In this way people become more informed about the current events occurring all
around the world and a sense of social consciousness is instilled within us. Another
undeniable fact is that mass media is making it increasingly easier for us to connect and
interact with other people. Thousands of people that share common interests meet in
various platforms and at times they even become close friends. This enhanced the sense of
friendship, respect for others and teaches us valuable communication skills. Lastly, social
networking offers a whole new world and opportunities for entertainment. Now with
platforms like YouTube, TikTok etc people not only can entertain, express themselves and
display their talents but people can also pick up new hobbies or discover other innate
skills/talents that they have.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that social media has downsides and can be harmful in
particular cases. For instance, while using social networking, the danger of addiction is
always looming nearby. Unfortunately this phenomenon is steadily growing- even in younger
audiences- and leave very dangerous repercussions behind, which are also liked with the
mental stability of people as it can cause or deteriorate a string of emotional disorders such
as MDD, OCD, SAD, eating disorders and so on. Another disadvantage that is worth
mentioning is that it gives people a ‘licence’ to be hurtful towards others. Unfortunately
research has shown that a lot of people have fallen victims to cyber bullying or even threats
from people online that have faked their true identity. Last but not least the excessive use of
social networking is that people can be exposed to inappropriate and violent scenes. This
poses great danger in the behaviour of people (especially teenagers and kids) since it foster
violence as an acceptable way of dealing with problems related with relationships with
others.

Taking everything in consideration, in recent years, social media has become ubiquitous and
while it has many advantages, it also possessed a series of disadvantages. This is why it is
imperative that we utilize them smartly so we can reap their benefits, while also using them
carefully and in moderation.
