Different Seasons of the Earth

A. What’s New
Earth moves mainly in two ways: it spins on its axis and goes around the sun.
As it revolves around the sun, the moon also revolves around the earth. Can
you imagine these motions happening at the same time?
Our planet is spinning around the sun at 30 kilometers each second.

B. What Is It
Even if we do not actually see the earth and the moon moving, we can observe
the effect of their motions. For example, because the earth rotates, we
experienced day and night. As the moon goes around the earth, we see
changes in the moon’s appearance. And because of these movements, there
are two seasons in the Philippines: the rainy and dry. You might have noticed
too that there are months of the year when it is cold and months when it is
hot.

C. Learning Activities
Directions: Read and write your answer in the activity sheet provided.
1. Study figure 1 carefully. It shows the earth at different locations along its
orbit around the sun. Notice that the axis of the earth is not perpendicular
to its plane of orbit, it is tilted. The letter N refers to north pole while S
refers to south pole.

Figure 1. The drawing shows the location of the Earth at different times of the year.

For Q1 & Q2 refer your answer to figure 1.

Q1. In which month is the north pole tilted toward the sun? In June or December?
Q2. In which month is the north pole tilted away from the sun? In June or December?

Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer and place your answer in the
answer sheet.

1. Which of the following causes the Earth season?

a. the varying amount of sunspot activity
b. the rotation of the earth during 24-hour a day
c. the earth orbit about the sun as an ellipse rather than a circle.
d. the tilt of the earth axis or rotation relative to the ecliptic as earth
revolves around the sun.

2. What effect does the tilting of the earth have?

a. when the earth is tilted away from the sun we have day.
b. when the earth is tilted away from the sun we have night.
c. it changes the angle that the sun strikes the earth in different land areas
d. it causes the earth to be farther away from the sun at different times of
the year.

3. When it is summer in southern hemisphere, which of the following

best describes the tilting of the earth in northern hemisphere?
a. Towards the sun
b. Away from the sun
c. Towards or away from the sun
d. Neither towards or away from the sun

4. Which motion do arrows in the diagram represent? Refer to figure 1.

a. Earth rotation
b. Sun’s revolution
c. Suns rotation
d. Earth’s revolution

5. Why do season change in the Philippines?

a. The sun is directed to the southern hemisphere only
b. The sun is somehow tilted to both northern and southern hemisphere
c. Season change because the earth is stationary directing its rays to
northern hemisphere always
d. Season change because direct rays of the sun shifts from one
hemisphere to the other as the earth goes around the sun.
