Monohybrid Cross

A. What’s New
Monohybrid cross involves a cross using a single factor or character
trait.
B. What Is It
The Punnett square is a diagram that allows us to determine the possible
combinations of genes in a given cross.
Sample Monohybrid Cross
F1 means First filial generation.
The Genotype refers to the genetic Problem 1: A homozygous green pod (GG) is
composition of the organisms. (ex. bb, GG, cross with a Homozygous yellow pod (gg).
Hh) What is the result of the possible offspring
The Phenotype is the physical appearance (F1)?
or feature of the organism. (ex. curly hair,
blue eyes or tall)
Identical alleles are called homozygous
(ex. AA, cc) while dissimilar alleles are
called heterozygous (ex. Aa)

➢ How to solve a simple Punnett square:

1. Set up a 2 by 2 Punnett square.
2. Write the alleles for parent 1 on
the above part and alleles of • Based on the illustration above the
parent 2 on the left of the Punnett resulting offspring are:
square. Genotype:
Gg- heterozygous green pod
3. Fill each square with the alleles
from parent 1 and 2 that lines up Gg- heterozygous green pod
with the row. Gg- heterozygous green pod
Gg- heterozygous green pod
4. Interpret the result of the Punnett Phenotypes:
square. The genotype and All are green pod
phenotype resulted from the Take note: Dominant traits always comes first
monohybrid cross (ex. YY x yy) before recessive traits. (Always apply the law of
dominance)

Phenotype:

1 short
3 tall
