TITLE: Latent Heat

AIM: To determine the melting point of candle wax

APPARATUS/MATERIALS:
Retort stand and clamp, test tube, water bath, candle wax, tripod stand, wire gauze,
thermometer, stopwatch, Bunsen burner, test tube holder

DIAGRAM:

METHOD/PROCEDURE:

1) Some candle wax was placed into a test tube and heated inside of a water bath as
shown in the diagram.

2) When all the candle wax melted, the test tube was carefully lifted from the water bath.
Without delay, the temperature was measured.

3) Using a stopwatch, the temperature of the substance was recorded every minute until it
solidified and cooled below its freezing point.
4) The results were tabulated and a graph of temperature against time was plotted.

5) The graph was used to obtain the melting point of candle wax.

DISCUSSION:
● What is a phase change? Define the melting / freezing point of a substance.
● Explain the shape of the graph at the different parts with relation to what is occurring.

SOURCE(S) OF ERROR:
● At least ONE source of error

PRECAUTION:
● At least ONE precaution

CONCLUSION:
● Remember to relate to the aim!!! Hence, your conclusion should be giving a value of the
melting point of candle wax.

REFLECTION:
● Relate between experiment and real life (Self, Society or Environment)
● What is the impact of knowledge gained from the experiment on you?
