Narrator: After the Rizal’s graduation from the Ateneo de Manila, his father Don Francisco, knowing that

his son was gifted with the exceptional intelligence, he decided to send him for higher education in
Manila but Dona Teodora was hesitant.

Don Francisco : Anak natatangi ang iyong katalinuhan, nais kong pag aralin ka sa kolehiyo sa Manila.
Teodora: Mahal kong Francisco , ang bilis mo namang magdesisyon. Nag aalala ako para sa magiging
kalagayan ng ating anak doon.
Don F: Pumayag kna mahal kong Teodora, hindi ba’t nais nating maging pari si Rizal.
Teodora: Sige nalang, papayag ako na mag aral ka doon ngunit mag ingat ka anak ha.
Rizal: Opo ama, ina, magiingat po ako roon

On April 1877, Jose Rizal returned to Manila and enrolled at the most prestigious university in the
Philippines which is the University of Sto. Tomas, taking the course of Philosophy and Letters. At that
time, Rizal was still confused of what course to study.

Rizal: Buenos Dias! Buenos Dias UST, masaya ako na dito ako nakapag aral. Sana maging matagumpay
ang aking magiging karanasan sa paarang ito. Ngunit hindi ako sigurado sa aking kinuha na Philosophy
and letters. Alam ko na, pupunta ako kay Pader Pablo Ramon.

Rizal consulted Rev. Fr. Pablo Ramon, the Director of Ateneo de Manila, as to what course to take.

Rizal: Magandang araw Padre Pablo Ramon, ako ay naguguluhan sa kung anong kurso ang aking
kukunin, maaari mo ba akong bigyan ng pagpipilian?

Fr. Pablo Ramon (Kent) : magandang araw rin rizal, Sa tingin ko Medisina ang kursong nababagay sa iyo.

Rizal: Oo nga padre noh, para narin sa kalagayan ng aking ina. Nais kong mapagaling ang kanyang
lumalabong mga mata.

Therefore he enrolled in the medicine course with the hope that he could relieve, Dona Teodora’s
failing eyesight.

Rizal was accustomed to going home during vacation in Calamba to join his family and spending time
with them after a long arduous study as a medical student at UST.
One night in 1878,

Guardia Civil (rhosque)- Hoy isang indio! Bumalik ka dito! Hindi mo ba ako nakikita? Bakit ikaw
ay hindi yumuko at nagbigay galang sa akin!? /Dungan Hapak* Walang Modo!

Rizal: Aray ginoo, pasensya na po kung hindi ko kayo nakilala. Hindi ko po sinasadya.

Guardia: Hindi kita mapapatawad! Isa kang lapatastangan!

Rizal: Patawarin nyo ako Ginoo pasensya na po, hindi na po mauulit

Rizal suffered from wounds inflicted on his back because he failed to recognize the Spanish Civil Guard
who was passing by his side. His wounds lasted for two weeks before it completely healed.

Rizal could not accept such brutal treatment inflicted by the Civil Guard; he went to Captain General
Primo de Rivera and complained of the Spanish Soldier.

Rizal : Magandang araw Kapitan Heneral Primo

Kapitan heneral primo: oh magandang araw din sa iyo rizal, anong nangyare sa iyo bakit ang dami mong
pasa sa katawan?

Rizal: Ito po ay kagagawan ng isang guardiya sibil nung nakaraang gabi.

Kalitan heneral primo: Ay yan lang naman natamo mo, pasalamat ka nga ikaw ay buhay pa. Binigyan kpa
ng pagkakataong mabuhay huwag kanang magreklamo.

In 1879, the Artistic and Literary Lyceum, a society whose members were composed of artists in
literature, sponsored a contest in poetry writing and composition. Rizal joined the contest

After the expert reading and scrutiny of the Board of Judges, the entries coming from Spanish, mestizo,
and Filipino students, who submitted their respective pieces to the Competition.

In 1880, the same society, the Artictic-Literary Lyceum sponsored another artistic completion in honor of
the 264th death anniversary of “Spain’s most glorified man of letter”.

In this competition, many writers participated and submitted their pieces.

Rizal was temporarily stripped of the award due to his identity as an Indio. Despite all objections from
Spaniards in Manila, the board of judges insisted that the work of Rizal deserved the first place.
