Pump Performance and Efficiency EMME-2091

Objectives
• To evaluate the pump's effectiveness and efficiency at various speeds and outlet
pressures.
• To compute and contrast the non-dimensional pump coefficients.
• To determine how changing the inlet pressure affects flowrate.

Introduction

Background / Theory

A rotodynamic pump is the centrifugal pump. By raising the pressure at its outlet, it forces fluids
through its body using a rotating impeller. Axial and radial fluid flow directions are both present
in a pump.

Figure 1 The Centrifugal Pump

3
Pump Performance and Efficiency EMME-2091

Centrifugal pumps are used in several applications. They include limited water and waste
pumping systems, low-pressure water irrigation, household central heating systems, and
appliances (such as washing machines and dishwashers). Because of this, centrifugal pumps are
among the most widely used machinery in the world.

Methodology

Figure 2 MFP101 Centrifugal Pump

The Centrifugal Pump is rotated by the Universal Dynamometer to produce a higher outlet
(delivery) pressure and a lower inlet pressure at the pump. From the reservoir, water passes via a
pump inlet valve, a strainer (filter), and a one-way valve before entering the pump. The pump
forces water through a Venturi before pushing it out an exit (delivery) valve. The Venturi and
pressure gauge combine to monitor pump flow. From the Venturi, water flows back down to the
reservoir. The water travels from the Venturi if an optional turbine is installed.

4
Pump Performance and Efficiency EMME-2091

To the reservoir by way of the optional turbine and then downward. Four electrical pressure
sensors are included in the Digital Pressure Display. With the Venturi Meter, one sensor (P1) has
differential tappings whereas the other three only have single tappings. Each gauge has a bleed
port that is used to release any trapped air before each test. Note that trapped air will cause
pressure readings to be erroneous.

Statement of purpose

This experiment aims to evaluate the pump's performance and effectiveness at various pressures
and speeds. This is performed by computing and contrasting the pump's non-dimensional
coefficients.

is picked up by a rotor system into usable work or energy.

7 Reservoir an artificial lake where water is stored.

8 Reservoir Drain Tap eliminates cylinder leakage from entering areas such as
coolant, water or other oil systems.

Procedure / Task Description

Set up

• Before using the pump, it must contain water.

• For accurate readings, you must bleed the trapped air from the pressure measurement
pipes.
o Fully open the delivery and inlet valves. To open the delivery valve, turn it's
handle to be in line with the pipework.
o Turn the inlet valve fully anti-clockwise to open it. o Set the Universal
Dynamometer speed control to minimum (fully anticlockwise). o Switch on
the main switch on its Motor Drive.
o Temporarily disconnect the pressure measurement pipes from the pressure
display.
o Allow at least 5 minutes for the instruments to "warm up" and stabilize. This
is important for the pressure display sensors.
o Use the button on the pressure display to set all readings to zero and
reconnect the pressure measurement pipes to the pressure display.
o Start the Universal Dynamometer and adjust its speed to approximately 2500
rev.min-1.

8
Pump Performance and Efficiency EMME-2091

o Use the bleed line in the bleed ports of the pressure display to bleed trapped
air from the pressure measurement pipes.
o Reduce the pump speed back down to zero.
• Note: The one-way valve in the inlet pipe to the pump will normally hold water in the
pipework and inside the pump for several days.
• Note: You must fill (prime) the pump if you have not used it for several days.

Varied Outlet Pressure

1. Press the start button of the Motor Drive and adjust the pump speed to 2500 rev.min-
1
(+/- 5 rev.min-1).
2. Record all readings.
3. Slowly shut the delivery valve to increase the outlet pressure in steps of 0.1 bar until
the flow stops (the valve is shut).
4. At each step, readjust the speed to 2500 rev.min-1 (+/- 5 rev.min-1) and record all
readings.
5. Repeat the experiment at pump speeds of 2000 and 1500 rev.min-1.
6. Reduce the pump speed down to zero and press the stop button on the Motor Drive.

Varied Inlet Pressure

1. Fully open the inlet and delivery valves.

2. Start the pump and increase its speed to 2500 rev.min-1 (+/- 5 rev.min-1).
3. Record all readings.
4. Slowly shut the inlet valve to decrease the inlet pressure in steps of 0.05 bar until the
flow stops (the valve is shut).
5. At each step, readjust the speed to 2500 rev.min-1 (+/- 5 rev.min-1) and record all
readings.
