ACTIVITY PROPER

Test for Carbohydrates

Objective:

To detect the presence of carbohydrates in food samples using chemical test.

Materials:

 Iodine solution or tincture of iodine


 Food samples for testing carbohydrates (bread, apple, avocado, potato)
 1 pc dropper per group
 5 spot plate per group

Safety tips:

 Wear your gloves during the experiment.


 Put each test sample in a test plate dedicated for that sample only.
 Do not put the droppers everywhere.

PROCEDURES:

1. Place ½ teaspoon of each food sample on a plate. Make sure that the food samples are far
from each other.
2. Add 3 drops of iodine solution on each food sample.
3. Observe what will happen to the food sample with iodine solution in 1 minute.
4. Note that iodine solution or tincture of iodine changes from yellow to blue or black in the
presence of starch/carbohydrates.
5. Compare the results in every food sample and write your observation in your activity sheet.

Note: sample food + iodine solution = blue color solution confirms the presence of starch
