Planting of Sweet Potato Slips. The slips will be planted to the designated

plots at the rate of four slips per hill at the distance row of 45cm x 45cm apart as

shown in figure 4.
24

Care of Plants. The plants will be properly care through the growing

period.

Water Management. Watering will be done early in the morning and late

in the afternoon. The soils will be kept moistened for one week after plant to

hasten the germination. An equal amount of water will be applied

throughout the plots with used of sprinkler.

Weed Control Management. Weeding will be done when weeds were

noticed growing along with the plants. First weeding will be done 15 days

after sowing. However, occasional weeding will be done to control the

growth of resistant weeds that could complete the sweet potato.

Control of Pests and Diseases. An agro-eco-system Analysis (AESA) will

be employed once a week. Pest population and pest damage will be

monitored as well as the presence of natural enemies. Then it will be

managed through the use of natural control.

Harvesting. Harvesting of sweet potato will be done at the right stage of maturity.

After it showed sign of maturity as characterized by the following of leaves.

Harvesting will be done 150 days after sowing. The harvested sweet potato will be

placed in sacks according to treatment assigned. Then all will be marked and

labeled.

Figure 4. Plant Distribution in every Plot (45cm x 45cm)

Data Gathering. The data gathered will be based on agronomic characteristics and

measurement observation. The economic return is also determined in terms of cost

of production gross income, net income and return of investments (ROI).

Agronomic characteristics

Visual Observation
26

Vigor and Stand of the Plant. Vigor and stand will be observed through the

color of the leaves and stem at the early vegetative growth of the plant The

collecting of data will be every 30 days after transplanting.

Incidence of Pest and Disease. The occurrence of pest and diseases will be

observed from the early vegetative stage up to maturity

Maturity. Maturity measurement from sweet potato will be observed on

root size Sweet potato will be harvested when most of roots have reached to

correct size for the intended market. This typically requires between 3 to 3.5

months from the time and transplanting.

Measurement observation

Number of Branches. 30 days after planting, the branches will be counted

Length of Herbage. The length of herbage of the ten representative sample

plants per plot will be determined by measuring the length of the herbage.

Number of Tuberous Root per Plant. The number of tuberous root per

plant will be counted and recorded. The measurement will be taken from the

ten representative samples.

Weight of Tuberous Root per plot. The weight of tuberous root per hill will

be weighed using scale. The total weight will be taken from the ten

representative samples.
27

Weight of the Marketable Tuberous Root per plot. The weight of the

marketable tuberous root per hill will be taken from the ten representatives

samples.

Diameter of Tuberous Root. This will be done by measuring the biggest

diameter of tuberous root per plant of sweet potato. The measurement will be

taken from ten representatives samples.

Yield per Plot. This will be done by weighing the harvested sweet potato in

kilograms per plot from each treatment. The total yield will be taken from the

ten representatives per plot.

Economic Return

In the different treatment under the study the expenses recorded and analyzed.

Cost of Production. The cost of production will be computed by determining

all the expenses incurred from the start up to end of the study.

Gross Income. To obtain the gross income, the yield per plot will be

converted into kilograms it will be determined by formulation.

Gross income = Yield (kg/ha) x Market price/kg

Net Income. The net income will be obtained by taking the different between

the gross income and cost of production of each treatment per replication. This

will be done by following the formula;

28

Net income = Gross income- Cost of Production

Return of Investment (ROI). It will be determined by dividing the net

income by the cost of production and then multiplied by 100, using the formula:

ROI= Net Income X 100

Cost of production

Statistical Analysis

Statistical analysis of data on the number of branches, length of herbage,

number of tuberous root, weight of tuberous root, weight of marketable tuberous

root, weight of non-marketable tuberous root, diameter of tuberous root, highest

yield, and highest yield in tons per hectare will be carried out using analysis of

variance (ANNOVA) appropriate for Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD)

Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) will be used in company statistically

significant treatment means. Descriptive analysis will be used in the economic

return.
