What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that connects with a purpose,
passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that you cannot just google an answer for. Please see

My inquiry question is:

- In what ways do immigrants conform to society’s standards and ideals to fit in and create a life for their future
generations?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are choosing to investigate
this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of
personal interest to you?

I chose this topic because I have family members who have had to conform to societies ideals. I am passionate about
this topic because I feel disconnected from my roots at time’s and I want to feel closer. This also allows me to explore
a field I would love to work in and that is the film industry.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this area of inquiry?

I have background information about the acculturation regarding immigration because of my families experience with
immigration. This also allows me to explore what I know about how racism and biases were in Canada further.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What connections does this inquiry
question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

This connects to what I want to do as a career as I want to continue with my passion of film production and social
justice. This project will connect to both avenues of my potential career paths as I connect my topic to both. If film
production doesn’t end up being my career path, it will be something that I will continue practicing and having a side
job for in the future.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core competencies will be
connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

This would fall under communication, personal and cultural identity, social responsibility, and critical/creative
thinking. For communication I will have to communicate with the participants of the project in a professional way.
Personal and cultural identity as I will be exploring my culture and how acculturation has affected my connection with
my culture. For social responsibility, I must ensure a safe and honest setting where the participants can speak openly
and be vulnerable with their answers and this can only happen if I create that environment. For critical thinking, I will
demonstrate different ways of showing my understanding of these topics and there will be elements of creative
thinking when it comes to formatting the questions surrounding my project and the art aspect of the film.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what will you research, create,
study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a
one-page description outlining your proposal.

I want to make a film on the effects of acculturation on migrants. I would like to see and share insight on how
immigrating will disconnect you from your culture and the process of re-gaining the loss. By doing this project I aim
to gain understanding of certain aspects that I have missing of my culture and spread light for other second-generation
Punjabi people as they can resonate with certain aspects of the project. For my project I would first generate the
questions I wish to explore in further detail. I would have to find a way to ask the questions and have it relate the aim
of my project. I would then begin the pre-production of the film. Figuring out different dynamic shots and impactful
shots will help in the creation of tension and add to the impact of the film. I would then start the film and edit the
film. I feel like this film will be very impactful and relatable to many other ethnic peoples and may feel an urge to
explore their culture further and regain that connection. I want to create a piece that can resonate with many other
demographics and have it as an accessible resource for people who are not quite ready to take the risk of learning
about themselves. If I finish the film in time for the Vancouver Film Festival, I wouldn’t mind submitting it so many
other people can see my project and feel as they belong somewhere too.

I have made some minor adjustments to my film as I have had some issues along the way. The big adjustment I have
made is instead of using both sets of grandparents I am using only one set because of the language barrier and it was
quite difficult to add subtitles as I am not proficient with the editing software I am using.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and skills you will need to be able
to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve
completion of this project? Detail your plans.

I will need a film camera and an editing software. I already am proficient with those resources as I’m a film student
and already have access to those items. I have already asked my film teacher if I am able to use some of the
technology that we have at school and the editing soft wares that are available and he was more than happy to help. I
also have access to other film students for a form of feedback and support in creating the film.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will you need to help you
complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you? What is your plan to access the
mentorship/community connections necessary for this project?

- My film teacher, he can help me by giving feedback and also by having access to the film.
- My friend who had gone to Capilano for film school.
I have asked both mentors if they are able to help me during this process and both have complied!

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee that might affect progress
with your Capstone Project?

Some limitations could be struggling with generating the questions that are able to give the adequate answers that I
am looking for. Another limitation would be balancing the project alongside IB exams as majority of my time would
go towards studying.
