THE NEED FOR COMBINING LEARNING MODALITIES IN THE NEW

NORMAL

In this new normal, the delivery of instruction and sustainability of educational

services would not be possible and feasible for the learners without the presence of the

learning delivery modalities or alternative learning methods. With these alternatives,

learners are still able to access pedagogical and instructional services offered by the

education department and its partner faculty members. Guided by the Learning

Continuity Plan, a public school may prefer to apply a single modality or even two or

more learning modalities depending on the learning needs, demands, capacities and

status of the learners who are affected by the current crisis.

There are several schools which also prefer to apply combination of two or more

learning delivery modalities in order to maximize opportunities to sustain the education

of the students via home-based, distance learning. The choice of which modalities may

be combined also depends on the nature and functions of a certain learning area or

subject. There are learning areas that evolve on practical skills or life skills which

require instruction facilitated not only through purely modular modality but also through

the aid of technology-aided modalities such as on-line and blended learning. These

subjects are those that focus on practical knowledge and competencies.

Combination of learning modalities needs to be aligned by the teachers to the

needs and status of the learners. Teachers also need to have proper and sufficient

trainings and specialization in the management of the combination of learning

modalities. This is to help them arrive at the best instructional and academic outcomes.
One or two modalities may be also utilized to support the use of other learning methods

that suit the needs of learners in this new normal.
