Numerical Assignment 1
Numerical Assignment 1
Numerical methods are step-by-step procedures that we use to solve math problems
and find their exact solutions. They follow a logical and organized approach,
similar to algorithms in computer science. By this techniques it allow us to
simplify difficult mathematical problems, making it simpler to compute and obtain
useful solutions.
Accuracy can be understood as hitting the bullseye in target shooting, where the
measured or calculated value is very close to the desired value. Precision, on the
other hand, is comparable to consistently hitting a specific spot on the target,
even if it may not be at the center. For instance, in a laboratory experiment, high
precision means measurements placed closely together, even if they do not match the
true value, while high accuracy means getting measurements that are close to the
true value.
Significant figures, also known as significant digits, are the digits in a number
that carry meaningful information about its precision. They indicate the level of
certainty in a measurement or calculation and help maintain consistency in the
reporting of numerical values. Here are five examples of numbers with their
significant figures:
1. 25.6: This number has three significant figures since all the digits (2, 5, and
6) are considered significant.
2. 0.00782: The significant figures in this number are three (7, 8, and 2), as
leading zeros are not considered significant unless they appear after a decimal
point.
3. 1200: In this case, the significant figures are two (1 and 2), as trailing zeros
without a decimal point are not significant.
4. 6.50: This number has three significant figures since all the digits (6, 5, and
0) are significant, including the trailing zero after the decimal point.
5. 1000: The significant figures in this number are one (1), as trailing zeros
without a decimal point are not significant unless indicated otherwise.
Explanation
Significant figures are like markers that tell us how certain we are about a
number. They serve as a representation of the important numbers in a measurement or
computation, providing us with a sense of the accuracy of our result. We ensure
that our data is reported in a way that is consistent with the level of accuracy we
have by utilizing significant figures.
