Year Two celebrated World Book Day in
style! The children looked fantastic dressed
up as their favourite storybook characters.
We saw princesses, Harry Potters, Mary
Poppins, super hero characters and many
more! Year 2 based their week on the story
of Greta and the Giants using Greta
Thunberg as our environmental inspiration.
They compared the setting of the forest and
the city, researched information about Greta
and some children even did some Japanese
forest bathing! All children had a fantastic
time!
Year 4 studied the book
‘The Minpins’ by Roald
Dahl. In the story, a
small boy named Billy
goes into the forest and
is chased by a terrible
creature. Billy climbs a
tall tree to escape and
meets tiny little
creatures
called Minpins who live
in the trees. Year 4
children created their
own Minpins from dolly
pegs – they are pictured
here.
Year 5 pupils also explored the
book ‘Mother Earth is Weeping’ by
Claire Donald. They discussed
the environmental issues that face
the world at present and ways in
which we can help the
environment; pupils each made a
pledge to Mother Earth to help
protect the environment. The
children wrote poems about
aspects of the Earth that are being
affected by Climate Change and
created artwork inspired by
artwork in the book. Here is
Michael, from Year 5, dressed as

Year 6 started the day listening to an online poetry
tutorial by Joseph Coelho, who was elected the UK’s
Children's Laureate in 2022. With his help, Year 6
wrote a World Book Day inspired poem. Following
this, Year 6 focussed on the issue of littering,
identified the most littered items in the UK and
discussed the impact of littering on the environment.
The children then analysed the features of the poem
‘One Broken Planet’. They used the same features
to create their own poem entitled ‘One Littered
Planet’. Photographed above is Harry’s costume,
inspired by Tom Fletcher’s ‘Christmasaurus’.

 Sporting Success!

I am proud to announce that our Year 5 and Year 6 Boys’ and Girls’ Sportshall Athletics team
made a triumphant return to the sporting arena on 3rd November at Staffordshire University
Academy. They were crowned winners of the Cannock and Rugeley School Sport Partnership
competition with a superb all-round team performance in the various running, jumping and
throwing events. The same athletes can now look forward to taking part in the Staffordshire
County Competition at Fenton Manor Leisure Centre, Stoke-on-Trent on 18th April.

Our Year 3 and Year 4 Boys’ and Girls’
Sportshall Athletics team also made a long-
awaited return to the sporting arena on 10 th
November at Staffordshire University
Academy. They finished in second position
in the Cannock and Rugeley School Sport
Partnership competition with an excellent all-
round team performance in the various
running, jumping and throwing events. The

I am also pleased to report that our Year KS2 cross-country teams took part in the Cannock and
Rugeley School Sport Partnership competition at Staffordshire University Academy on 28 th
February. From the trial races at Five Ways, a team of 4 girls and a team of 4 boys were
selected from each year group. Mr Redpath wrote, ‘Excellent support from parents, a testing
course, and squalid weather conditions saw all our individual runners from all our teams give
their absolute best in terms of competitive attitude and effort. Special mention to Huw Wright
who won the Year 3 boys’ race, and Erin Houlston who won the Year 5 girls’ race.’ Well done to
everyone who took part – you were amazing!
