Lesson Plan in English 10

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
a. elaborate the five pointers on how to improve our vocabulary emphasized in the article of Tony Randall;
b. appreciate the value of building up our vocabulary to different aspects of our lives;
c. create their own strategies that will help them improve their vocabulary.

Picture Parade
The teacher will show different pictures to the students. The students will combine those pictures to be
able to complete the broken words hidden through the images.

Building Up Vocabulary: How to Improve Your Vocabulary

1. Try to guess the meaning of the word from the way it is used.
Ex. “The manacles had been on John’s wrist for 30 years. Only one person had a key – his wife”
Answer: Handcuff

2. Look it up.
Ex. Man-a-cle (man’ a-kal) n. usually plural.
A device for confining the hands, usually consisting of two metal rings that are fastened about the
wrist and joined by the metal chain; a handcuff.

3. Dig the meaning out by the roots


-The root is the basic part of the word – its heritage, its origin
-Latin and Greek word
-2,000 years old
-Indo – European tongues
4. Get the powerful prefixes under your belt.

5. Put your new words to work at once.


Should you “use” them on friends? Careful – you don’t want them you’re stuffed shirt.

e. Application
 The teacher will ask the students to look for a partner. Each partner will make 5 sentences that have
unfamiliar words. Their works will be exchanged from one partner to another to be answered then
will be presented in front afterwards.

f. Generalization
 Word power is our key to success. If you are a person with a strong vocabulary, you have a better
chance to succeed in all aspects of your life: personal, intellectual, economic, social and spiritual,
and many more that you wish to achieve. This lesson tackles an article that emphasizes five pointers
on how to build up our vocabulary and let us understand the importance of enriching our
vocabulary.

Direction: Guess the meaning of the underlined words based on how they are used in the sentences.
