Class Example 1 – Internal forces revision
A plane frame is restrained at joints A and
C, as shown in the figure. Members AB and
BC are pin connected at B. A triangularly
distributed lateral load with a peak intensity
of 1300 N/m acts on AB. A concentrated
moment is applied at joint C.

(a) Find reactions at supports A and C.

(b) Find internal stress resultants N, V, and

M at y = 1.0 m on column AB.

N = 247 N V = −2229 N M = −3586 N  m 

Class Example 2 – Normal stress
A pickup truck tailgate supports a crate (WC = 900 N),
as shown in the figure.
The tailgate weighs WT = 270 N and is supported by
two cables (only one is shown in the figure).
Each cable has an effective cross-sectional area

(a) Find the tensile force T and normal stress  in

each cable.

Class Example 3 – Bond stress
The steel anchor bolt with a circular cross
section supports a steel cable with a cable
force of 17kN. The anchor bolt is fixed by
means of grout (G) into the insitu concrete
(B). The allowable normal stress of the
anchor bolt is 160MPa and the allowable
bond shear stress for the grout is 3MPa.

(a) Calculate the required diameter (d) for the bolt to the nearest millimetre 𝑑𝑟𝑒𝑞 = 12 𝑚𝑚 ←

(b) Assume the diameter (d) is 16mm. What is the minimum length (l) that 𝓁𝑟𝑒𝑞 = 113𝑚𝑚 ←
the anchor bolt should be embedded into the grout.

(c) What is the maximum load that can be applied to the bolt given that 𝑃𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 22.608𝑘𝑁 ←
the diameter of the bolt is 16mm and the embedded depth is 150mm

A tie-down on the deck of a sailboat consists
of a bent bar bolted at both ends, as shown in
the figure. The diameter d of the bar is 6 mm,
