ACTIVITY 2 - MY IDEAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

A learning environment is more than just a classroom—it is a space in which students feel safe and
supported in their pursuit of knowledge, as well as inspired by their surroundings. But there’s more than just
aesthetics at play in an effective learning environment. Teachers can also influence a learning
environment by the way they teach and the atmosphere they create in the classroom.
The second activity of Field Study 1 entitled, ‘My Ideal Learning Environment’, includes classroom
observation and interviews with teachers and school personnel of Bayambang National High School. Our
exposure to various school settings enabled us to generate and illustrate our ideal school environment that
is safe, secure, and conducive to learning.
This worksheet contains our observation report regarding the availability of different school facilities
in BNHS, as well as questions regarding the community where the school is located, the classroom
management strategies we’ve observed, the strategies the teacher utilized to keep the learning
environment safe, and conducive, the impact of the environment to learners, and lastly our own-designed
learning environment.
The Bayambang National High School (BNHS) is located in Magsaysay St., municipality of
Bayambang Region 1 province of Pangasinan, with the school ID of 300168, division of Pangasinan 1,
Lingayen, and in 3rd legislative district. The school is near the town's Police Station, Municipal Hall, Events
Center, Church, and Public Plaza. The community where the school is located is considered to be the
center of the town as the main industries of the municipality are here established – malls, banks, and
transportation terminals, among others. Residential places are also surrounding the school, and business
entities are also established. Most importantly, it is surrounded by a caring community where people help
one another during difficult times and are willing to offer everything only to support one another. The
community demonstrates a friendly environment in which young people can be inspired to achieve their
goals.
According to the Finnish National Board of Education in 2004, the learning environment has a
significant impact on the learner’s attitude, perspective, and academic performance. A learning
environment is a learning setting consisting of the physical environment, psychological factors, and social
relationships.
BNHS features 89 classrooms, 1 administrative room, 1 supply office room, a cashier office, a clinic,
a school cafeteria, a large sports field, a guidance office, 8 Learning Resource Centers, an NDEP building,
a principal’s office, a gymnasium, and a computer lab. It also has washing areas, and basketball and
tennis courts.
Meanwhile, upon our observation, there were several classroom strategies we observed. First,
Ma’am Del Rosario, the cooperating teacher assigned to us, set clear instructions about listening and
speaking in class. Second, she made sure to give a brief recap of their last discussion. This way, the learners
can refresh their memories and they can connect their past lesson to the new one. Third, the teacher
maintains consistent communication with her students. She lets them recite and speak regarding their
lesson. She acknowledges and validates their answers. She made them feel seen and heard. Fourth, she
incorporated technology-based instructional materials to catch the attention of the learners so that they
would not get bored in class. Fifth, she gave her students flexible and bully-free learning and teaching
discussion. She did not punish them or force them to answer questions they cannot answer. Instead, she
encouraged them and gave them time to think. Lastly, she made sure to remind them of their assignment
and lesson for the next meeting. This is a good classroom management strategy to keep the learners'
engaged in the lesson.
If we were to design a learning environment for our would-be students, the first thing we will do is to
make sure the classroom is very welcoming to the students. We will design the classroom with learning
materials related to the lessons we will be discussing with our students for them to have a glimpse of what
they will be learning in our subject. School rules and regulations will also have a place in our classroom. We
will also install bulletin boards where students, after class, can post what they have learned after the
discussion, opinions, and ideas on what and how they wanted our next discussion to be like. This is another
way of making the students take part in the lecture proper other than making them recite and present to
the class. In this way, we will also be gaining ideas to develop our teaching.
Other than the physical environment, it is also conducive to establishing an environment where
students’ differences are encouraged. If the students feel that their teacher gives importance to the way
they perceive and learn their lessons, the students participate and learn better.
In conclusion, effective classrooms have respectful, organized, and productive environments that
enable students to take intellectual risks and maximize learning time.
