What Is History
The word history comes from the Greek word historeo meaning “to investigate”. History is all
around you. It is in the buildings you see, the songs you listen to, the clothes you wear and the
tools and technology you use. Everything you use was first made in the past. Now you are part
of what people in the future will call “history.” You are “history”.

‘Those who don’t learn history are doomed to repeat it.’ (Edmund Burke)
‘He who controls the past controls the future.’ (George Orwell)

Historical Sources
There are two main types of historical sources: primary sources and secondary
sources
A secondary source is something that has been made recently about the past.
for Example: A Roman coin that was made by the Romans is a primary source, but a
drawing of a Roman coin made in 2003 is a secondary source.
OR
A book written about the Tudors in 1525 is a primary source, but a book written about
the Tudors in 1995 is a secondary source.
1. Decide whether the following sources are primary or secondary ones.
2. A picture shows a steward's jacket that was recovered from the wreck of the Titanic
and is now in the Titanic Museum in New York. The Titanic, owned by the White Star
Shipping Line, only made one journey and sank on 15th April 1912.
