CNC MILLING OPERATIONS
Objective
To understand the basic operations and working of milling machines and to make a part on milling
machine having drilling, facing and cutting operations.

Introduction
A CNC milling machine is a computer-controlled tool that can be used to perform a wide range of
cutting and shaping operations on various materials such as metal, plastic, wood, and composite
materials. CNC stands for “Computer Numerical Control,” which means that the machine is
controlled by a computer program that has been specifically designed to guide the machine’s
cutting tools in the creation of precise, complex shapes and forms.
CNC milling machines are widely used in various industries, including automotive, aerospace,
medical device manufacturing, and many others. They offer a number of advantages over
traditional, manually operated milling machines, including higher precision, greater consistency,
and faster production times. They are also capable of creating more complex parts and shapes
than traditional milling machines.
In addition, CNC milling machines can be programmed to produce identical parts repeatedly,
which is particularly useful for mass production. They are also capable of producing parts with
very tight tolerances, ensuring that parts fit together precisely and function as intended. Overall,
CNC milling machines offer a high degree of precision, versatility, and efficiency, making them
an essential tool for many manufacturing processes.
To make the part according to the drawing we have to perform the following operations

End mill operation

End milling is a type of milling operation that uses an end mill to remove material from a
workpiece. End mills are cutting tools that are used in milling machines, and they come in a
variety of shapes and sizes to suit different cutting applications.

Drilling Operation
Drilling is a common machining operation that involves creating a hole in a workpiece using a
rotating cutting tool called a drill bit. Drilling is used in many different industries, including
automotive, aerospace, construction, and electronics manufacturing.

Working Procedure
1. In this lab we had done two basic operations on CNC milling machine including milling and
drilling by using specific tools.
2. First of all we had generated the cad model on CREO software and established the stock.
3. Then we had generated the G and M codes using CAM software known as CREO.
4. Then after generating the codes and arranging the stock material we had camped the
workpiece om the machine bed.
5. As machine center is the center of table so by using it we had selected the part center.
6. After some adjustments on screen display including feed, depth of cut, cutting time etc, we
run the code and machine started working.
7. After the complete manufacturing of part we had checked the dimensions using vernier
caliper and compared with the nominal values.

Results and Discussions
Using the above figure, we compared the nominal and the measured dimensions.

Conclusion
In conclusion, CNC milling machines are versatile and powerful machines used for a wide range
of cutting operations in various industries. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to
create complex designs that can be executed with high precision and accuracy. We have made the
part according to the given drawing and we have achieved the accuracy closed to the nominal size
that will not be possible by the conventional milling machine..
