Reading Strategies Across Subject Areas

1. Re-read Strategy – helps the readers clarify their thoughts by going back and re-
read something that was mis-read, find mistake (if any) and fix it.
2. Scanning – is the extraction of explicit (easy to spot) details from the material
read.
- In most cases when readers have already grasped the ideas, implicit
details easy to find.
3. Spotting pronoun referents – is the identification of antecedents that pronoun/s
refer to.
4. Reading out loud – is the method of reading aloud the material
- Let the learners hear their voice (while releasing the sound) while
she/he has been heard by others.
- You can advise them to record their voices.
5. Using context clues – ability to identify the meaning of words from other words
that surround it.
6. Making Connections – is the heart of reading comprehension where readers
connect what they know to what they are reading.
7. Skimming – getting the gist/summary of the selection. (Often seen on topic
sentence)
8. Inferring / Draw Conclusion – this requires readers to use prior knowledge and
the information stated in the text to draw conclusions.
9. Visualizing and organizing (webbing) – a strategy that a teacher can use to
see what a student knows then give them additional information, so they have it
for further reference.
