I. Introductory Concept

We Filipinos in general, are noted to be among the fun-loving and health


conscious people in the world. Physical fitness activities are performed in colorful
festival and street dances which highlights a year-round celebration all over the country.
Festival Dances are performed by people of various walks of life for entertainment, fun,
and merrymaking purposes giving premium to personal fitness plus the victory of
winning a competition.
This learning activity sheet will introduce you to the festival dances of our
country. As you identify its nature and origin, you will learn how to differentiate a
folkdance from festival dance. You will also tell the importance of being physically fit in
order to produce a beautiful presentation. As we learn the various festival dances all
over the country, you will find out where these dances originated, how they came to be
and when these dances are performed. Let’s go and enjoy our travel around the
Philippines.

Why Festivals?
Festival dances are cultural dances performed to the strong beats of percussion
instruments by a community of people sharing the same culture usually done in honor of a
Patron Saint or as thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. Festival dances may be religious or
secular in nature. Festival dances draw the people’s culture portraying the people’s way of life
through movements, costumes and implements inherent to their place of origin.

NATURE OF FESTIVAL DANCES:

A. Cultural with religious influence


These are dances characterized by movements showing reverence to a religious icon
believed to have interceded in their personal life. The Philippines where majority of its
people are Catholic, celebrate fiestas pompously and with so much gaiety.
Some of these dances are:

ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL is a feast held annually in January in honor of the Santo Niño
(Infant Jesus), including on the third Sunday, in the island and town of Kalibo, Aklan in
the Philippines. The name “Ati-Atihan” means “to be like Aetas” or “make believes
Ati’s”. Aetas where the primary settlers in the islands according to history books.

MORIONES FESTIVAL is an annual festival held on Holy Week on the island of


Marinduque, Philippines. The “Moriones” are men and women in costumes and masks
replicating the garb of biblical Roman soldiers as interpreted by local folks. The
Moriones or Moryonan tradition has inspired the creation of other festivals in the
Philippines where cultural practices or folk history is turned into street festivals. The
participants use morion masks to depict the Roman soldiers and Syrian mercenaries
within the history of the Passion of the Christ.

DINAGYANG FESTIVAL is a religious and cultural festival in Iloilo City, Philippines held
on the fourth Sunday of January, or right after the Sinulog in Cebu and Ati-Atihan in
Aklan. It is held both to honor the Santo Niño and to celebrate the arrival on Panay of
Malay settlers and the subsequent selling of the island of them by the Atis.

SINULOG FESTIVAL in Cebu City is held every year on the third Sunday of January.
The festival is characterized by a very long parade with many groups of persons dressed
in colorful costumes, finding their way through the streets while dancing the Sinulog.
This Sinulog dance, is now the traditional and ritual dance in honor of Santo Niño. The
dance is accompanied by the sound of the drums; all the time moving two steps forward
followed by one step backward.

FEAST OF OUR LADY OF PEÑAFRANCIA is celebrated on the third Saturday of


September in Naga City, Bicol. The feast day is preceded by a novena, nine days of
prayer, in honor of the Virgin. On the first day, the image of the Virgin, a copy of the
Madonna in Peñafrancia, Spain, is brought from its shrine to the Naga Cathedral where
novena is held. On the last day, the image is returned to her shrine following the Naga
River route.

PAHIYAS FESTIVAL is one of the country’s biggest, and most colorful harvest festival
every May 15th, along with the harvest festivals of the towns of Tayabas, Sariaya,
Gumaca, and Tiaong. These are the Philippines known harvest festivals to honor San
Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers. Decorations called “kiping”, leaf-shaped
and multi-colored rice paste wafers which are used to decorate the facades of the
homes along with fruits and flowers from nature.

B. Indigenous Influence/ Non-Religious Festival
Filipinos who are known to be fun loving people always find time to celebrate any
occasion be it personal, family or even those that will require the whole community to
commemorate an event or acknowledge an icon which became the source of inspiration,
identity and unity. The dance culminates in a grand presentation where dancers display their
skills with prowess, excellent choreography and colorful props in full tapestry.
Here are some of the dances:

LANZONES FESTIVAL is an annual thanksgiving celebration for Camiguin Island’s


bountiful harvest. The town of Mambajao holds the feast during the third week of
October, in time for the season of the tropical fruit lanzones. The province of Camiguin
is known for having the sweetest lanzones among the abundant sources of the fruit
along the north-central coast of Mindanao.

MASKARA FESTIVAL the festival first began in 1980 during a period of crisis. The
Bacolod City relied on sugar cane as its primary agricultural crop, and the price of sugar
was at an all-introduction of sugar substitutes like high fructose (corn syrup) in the
United States. In the midst of these tragic events, the city’s artists, local government and
civic groups decided to hold a festival of smiles, because the city at that time was also
known as City of Smiles.

IBALONG FESTIVAL is a non-religious festival in Legazpi City, Albay, Philippines and is


held in August. The festivals celebrates the epic story Ibalong who was accompanied by
three legendary heroes, namely Baltog, Handyong, Bantong and other ancient heroes.

KALILANGAN FESTIVAL is annual festivity that is celebrated in General Santos City


and takes place in the month of February. Kalilang means to Kalilangan Festival
celebrates is the tradition of sharing, hospitality, altruism that is part of the cultural
heritage of Mindanao.

C. Film
This festival is a gathering of artists, film makers, directors, scriptwriters, and other
people involved in the film making where the motion pictures captured in films are made to
entertain, educate and inform the audience, are shown on screen for public viewing. Film rating
from authorities is required to suit to the viewing public.

METRO MANILA FILM FESTIVAL- PHILIPPINES (MMFF-P) is an annual film festival


held in Manila. The festival, which runs from the 25 th of December to the first week of
January in the following year, focuses on locally produced films.

D. Flower Festival
This festival commemorates the season of blooming as it pays tribute to the blooms and
lush found in a particular place. In some places where flowers abound, the festival is a
way of expressing their gratitude by means of flower offering.

PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL (Blooming Flowers Festival) is a month-long annual
flower festival occurring in Baguio, the Summer Capital of the Philippines. The festival
held during the month of February was created as a tribute to the city’s flowers and as a
way to rise up from the devastation of the 1990 Luzon earthquake.

ACTIVITY 3: “MAKE ONE”


We all know that here in Camarines Norte, we all have different festivals celebrated in
each municipality. Based on your residence, create and draw your own design of costume
based on what festival you are celebrating in the locality.
Aside from making it, write a details about the festival dance, how and when they are
performed.

Example: You live in Capalonga, Camarines Norte, you will create design of costume and head
dress of the Palong Festival and make a short description about the history of the festival, and
when it is performed.
