Why Festivals?
Festival dances are cultural dances performed to the strong beats of percussion
instruments by a community of people sharing the same culture usually done in honor of a
Patron Saint or as thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. Festival dances may be religious or
secular in nature. Festival dances draw the people’s culture portraying the people’s way of life
through movements, costumes and implements inherent to their place of origin.
ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL is a feast held annually in January in honor of the Santo Niño
(Infant Jesus), including on the third Sunday, in the island and town of Kalibo, Aklan in
the Philippines. The name “Ati-Atihan” means “to be like Aetas” or “make believes
Ati’s”. Aetas where the primary settlers in the islands according to history books.
DINAGYANG FESTIVAL is a religious and cultural festival in Iloilo City, Philippines held
on the fourth Sunday of January, or right after the Sinulog in Cebu and Ati-Atihan in
Aklan. It is held both to honor the Santo Niño and to celebrate the arrival on Panay of
Malay settlers and the subsequent selling of the island of them by the Atis.
SINULOG FESTIVAL in Cebu City is held every year on the third Sunday of January.
The festival is characterized by a very long parade with many groups of persons dressed
in colorful costumes, finding their way through the streets while dancing the Sinulog.
This Sinulog dance, is now the traditional and ritual dance in honor of Santo Niño. The
dance is accompanied by the sound of the drums; all the time moving two steps forward
followed by one step backward.
PAHIYAS FESTIVAL is one of the country’s biggest, and most colorful harvest festival
every May 15th, along with the harvest festivals of the towns of Tayabas, Sariaya,
Gumaca, and Tiaong. These are the Philippines known harvest festivals to honor San
Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers. Decorations called “kiping”, leaf-shaped
and multi-colored rice paste wafers which are used to decorate the facades of the
homes along with fruits and flowers from nature.
MASKARA FESTIVAL the festival first began in 1980 during a period of crisis. The
Bacolod City relied on sugar cane as its primary agricultural crop, and the price of sugar
was at an all-introduction of sugar substitutes like high fructose (corn syrup) in the
United States. In the midst of these tragic events, the city’s artists, local government and
civic groups decided to hold a festival of smiles, because the city at that time was also
known as City of Smiles.
